About two weeks ago I bought a two pound bag of USA garlic at Costco. I knew it would get used right away so I figured I'd try something and see if it prolonged the shelf life of fresh garlic. I Foodsavered some airtight. I noticed two or three days later that it wasn't airtight vacuumed and so I resealed it with a tight vacuum in another Foodsaver bag. A couple of days ago I see that it's not in a vacuum anymore but just the opposite. It's filled with air or a gas from the fresh garlic and the bag is like a balloon.
Has anyone ever seen something like this before?

The bag is actually tightly sealed and expanding tighter each day that passes.

Yeah you can't vacuum seal garlic. Just put it in an onion bag and let it sit out at room temp

please tell me you didn't go two weeks without garlic

I'm not surprised. If you think about salads, veggies, salsas, green beans etc they all bloat up when sealed in a bag/container. Im not sure what causes it though.

Ps I thought you were going a different direction with this thread when I saw gassy garlic

Yeah, that stuff is rough, I thought it was the worst after a crawfish boil, but then I ate too much pickled garlic at Albasha one night and I will NEVER do that again

The bag has gotten tighter and seems to have expanded a little more. At least Foodsaver works as it should. I think today I will gently poke a hole in it to release the gas. Just don't know if I'm going to do it indoors or outdoors.
