Hawaii in June. Need Advice

Never been and the wife and I are going to book for the first week in June.
I' hear Maui is great but need opinions from those that have been. Which island(s) would you choose to stay at.
We want to hike, see some waterfalls, cliff jump, etc... all the outdoors stuff. We also want to be able to go out and eat without being "stuck" at a resort or what have you. See some nightlife and go into town some.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Hotels suggestions would be great as well!
TIA!
ETA: I did a search and did not see it.

Spend the extra cash on the nicest room you can afford, then spend as much time in there as possible.

Maui and Kona (the big Island) both have plenty to do. We stayed on Maui. Next time we will probably stay on Kona to do Volcano National Park, if we ever get back.

The problem with Lahaina is that it takes forver to get to/from. If you don't really want to leave Lahaina, stay there. But if you want to travel to different parts of the island I suggest somewhere more centralized and closer to the airport (Kihea for example).

If it's your first timeits really hard to pick one island IMO. We loved Maui but seeing Pearl Harbor was an absolute must for me.
For this, I would say Maui fits perfect. We booked through VRBO
LINK
It was like $200/night and very centrally located about 20 minutes from the airport, 45 minutes or so to Lahaina, 10 minutes to Maui Brewing, real close to shopping, 25 minutes or so to Mamas Fish House (unbelievable seafood dinner. expensive, but worth it.)
The road to Hana has alot of hiking and waterfalls.
Feat at LeLe Luau was awesome and so was the Old Lahaina Luau.
Rent a convertable or jeep for for sure...you see them everywhere but nothing like dropping the top and driving the island. We lucked out when renting a Camaro and got a Mustand GT since thats all they had.
I made a little YouTube video from that portion of our trip I would post but the freakshow lurkers here make me nervous.

People on TD have been known to take things entirely too far (digging into peoples personal lives, etc).
