Does your company plan to raise salaries to the new minimum? Or just pay those employees overtime?

Any other changes taking place because of this?

How are people reacting and what are their opinions?

I'd rather just put in 44-45 hours and not have to worry about staying under 40.

My wife's business has one salaried employee that makes under that amount by about $4k. We will bring that person up to the limit.

I have an employee that got bumped to salary less than a year ago and makes in the low 40's. Next week I get to tell her she is going back to hourly and she is no longer going to get bonus because only salary workers get bonus.

Do you have any control over the bonus? Because if so, you should definitely give it to her.

Nope. Our "investors" made that decision this year.

How does this system work?

Say you got a job out of college that is paying $30K a year on a salary. Are you now eligible for overtime?

Yes or comp time.

I think of you are under 47500, you get OT or comp time for >40 hours.

Oh, well that doesn't change anything. They will just say you work 40 hours a week and make a salary.

This doesn't affect me, but in general I think it's a reform long overdue. A lot of low level management types getting shafted over the years.

Pretty much. But most companies will not want to pay OT though, so you will be required to stay at 40. The OT budgets I would assume for most will be very very tight.

It can be good in some cases and bad in others. You lose flexibility and some benefits that go along with being exempt vs nonexempt.

seems like my company is planning on putting the hourly rate at a number that would require 48 hour weeks (with 8 hours at OT rate) to hit the old salary number.

doesnt effect a ton of folks but im expecting to see some unhappy people when those meetings go down.

In my company we have 4 people that will be affected by this new rule. We are keeping them at salary but making them clock in/out each day so we can keep track of their hours. All OT needs to be pre-approved so we're not too concerned about people taking advantage of OT. It will be something that we keep track of and adjust accordingly.

Our IT guy is mad. He is being made hourly and will lose some benefits as a result.
