This could be one of the most special teams we've had in a long time, but there remain 2 big issues that could be a thorn in our back. Our kick and punt defense was ok at best last season and we currently have an unstable situation with our field goal kicker (whoever that's gonna be). I believe this is a very overlooked combination of issues. Anybody have any insight on why we should expect better than last season or are we banking on the offense putting up enough to where it won't matter?

Our FG kicker situation isn't unstable, there's just a competition between a few very good kickers, and the best one will win. We were still very good at FG's last year, minus the little slump Domangue had towards the end of the season.

Having talented freshman and sophomores that the only way to see the field is by special teams will help out tremendously. Past few years those freshman and sophomores had to play full time on O or D so their urgency for special teams wasn't always there.

If by ok you mean 128th in the country, sure, why not.

Here are some key areas and our national rank last year.

LSU 116th in TB%
LSU 15th in kicks out of bounds with a staggering 4 (no onsides kicks) (!)
LSU 113th in average kickoff distance
LSU 44th in avg kickoff return given up (110 in average yards per game because we scored a lot of points)
LSU 128th in average punt return given up (18.91 yards per return)
LSU 82nd in average kickoff return
LSU 47th in average punt return
LSU 49th in FG%
LSU 84th in FG attempts
LSU 60th in PAT% (not a huge deal because we missed one, but we haven't had a clean PAT season since 2012)
LSU no kicks or punts blocked (haven't blocked a kick since 2013)

Shhhhhhhhhhhh, the posi-tigers are going to rail on you for bringing up a little bit of the truth. What they don't understand is sometimes the truth hurts a little bit, but doesn't make it any less the truth.

Really good points matter of fact I think our special teams play is going to be a determining factor in the games in November and help dictate the outcome as much as Brandon Harris's play. Our special teams coverage was atrocious compared to our norm, we need to fix it and hopefully BDP does that although I don't have a lot of confidence in his ability to do that even though he is a tremendous recruiter. I just hope he proves me wrong!!!

It was atrocious compared to anything. We were pretty much one of the worst units in the country soup to nuts.

You act like we lost the most amazing kicker ever.

He was good, but he was not really tested much, especially from distance..

We have very good capable kickers.. even an upperclassman with experience.

This doesn't make any sense. Why would giving up a lot of points increase our kickoff return yards allowed? Wouldn't it be caused by scoring a lot of points ourselves, hence kicking off a lot and allowing a lot of KO return yards per game?

I do agree with Special teams being Special last year, but maybe not the way you think, but I do see LSU improving cause there's really no where to go but up IMO...I hope!

Hope they find guys willing to give it their all on ST.

We actually were better in every st category from 13-14 except kick coverage. Now from 14-15 we were worse in every category.

Better recruiting should help this year some, but won't be up to par until next year's class is in...jmho

"we know absolutely nothing yet"

thanks drama queen for that ridiculously exaggerated remark. We know that we have a monster load of talent and have assembled an incredible coaching staff. No need to be "that guy"
