We're going to cook a Southern BBQ meal tomorrow, but I don't have any way to smoke or grill the pork. I have a 4 pound Boston butt that I plan on cooking in the Crockpot.

I was thinking about getting some wood chips hot and smoking a bit in the oven and letting the butt sit in there for 10-20 minutes to get a smoke flavor.

Bad idea? Good idea? Just forget the smoke?

I have a large vent above the stove and oven and a fan that can blow the smoke and smell out the kitchen door.

Have a fire extinguisher handy.

Probably a bad idea. All that smoke inside can't be good, and 10-20 minutes probably won't do much anyway.

I have not used liquid smoke, but I know it exists. Either that, or just get a smokey BBQ sauce.

I see no problems with having a fire in your oven

Nah, I've definitely done this before. It worked out great.

I wish I would have taken pics. Do the board a favor and record the process, then upload the video to youtube. It will definitely be beneficial for the entire board. Sometimes the weather just doesn't cooperate and you can't make it outside to grill/smoke. People need to see there are alternatives.

Here is the issue, 20 minutes of smoke, on even a small butt with the heaviest wood you can find will barely leave any smoke flavor. Your are honestly better off going to the the Dollar Store and buying the cheapest kettle pit and using some charcoal and wood for a few hours before finishing in the oven.

I really wonder how you function in life if you're really asking if you can start a fire in your oven.

a MUCH MUCH better idea would be to go grab a cheap arse disposable grill from Walmart and use it.

Cheap grill to keep the fire department away
