I agree that this season is disappointing but I think that expectations were way to high for this team and that the team and the star player failed to handle the pressure.
When will it be OK for us to "expect" an NCAA tourney birth and/or some semblance of consistent play? Do we need 3-4 more top 100 prospects at a time? Just let me know. Thanks!

The talent JJ has had the last three seasons would have equated to three NCAA appearances by a good coach.

Definitely -1 since he won that won for NC State last year.
ETA: BB03 had the same senitment.

ITS OBVIOUS WHY HE IS DEFENDING HIM. THEY DON'T EVER CRITICIZE THEIR OWN

quote:I noticed that. His teams seem to underachieve through most of the season, then performed well in the Conference Tournament. In the two years that he won the conference tournament (barely) he made the NCAA tournament with the automatic bid.
He never won a regular season title at north Texas in 12 years. Never finished better than 3rd in his DIVISION except twice. His career conference record is barely above .500.
Unfortunately slow starts and under-performing during the regular season won't get it done in the SEC. You are too far behind towards the end of the season and most people would agree that winning the SEC tournament is a lot more difficult than winning the Sun Belt.
Here are the things cJJ does that I never see from a successful coach:
1) Riding starters nearly 40 minutes all season, even in cupcakes. Heck, the starters were in the game on Saturday down 30 with 4 minutes to play.
2) cJJ's timeout pattern. I have never seen a coach consistently call timeouts after his own team makes a big basket. Half the time I am thinking that this would be a great time for the other team to call a timeout, but Johnny has extras so he uses one of his instead. And everyone knows how he avoids timeouts the rest of the game.
3) So many bad shots that go unpunished. In the win on Friday, Sampson came in in the 2nd half with about 90 seconds left and immediately took a horrible 3 pointer, then a wild layup, and finally another horrible 3 pointer on 3 straight possessions. WTF? TQ, 'nuff said.
4) The last play of a half or a tied game, and really the last few minutes of a close game, involves someone (TQ, Simmons, JOB3, etc) getting the ball 5 feet beyond the 3 point line, waiting until the last possible second, then go one on one for a drive or hoisting up a contested 3 pointer. I could see that once or twice, but damn, this team does it nearly every time for all 4 years cJJ has been here.

I guess you missed the point of my post. North Texas is one of the worse jobs in Division one basketball and they have no resources and tradition. His last 5 years their he turned them around and made them respectable.

So let me guess LSU is the first team to blow a lead in the tournament? It happens every year that's why they call it March Madness. On any given night a Mercer can beat Duke

Grow up! Just because I have an opinion to support the basketball program doesn't mean I'm Collis or Dale. I am giving you the facts!

Perhaps North Texas is where Jones needs to be.
The major attributes lauded when he was hired do not pan out for consistent success at LSU IMO. #1-Great recruiter. Well, he has had some top level recruits, but they only stay for a year or two. That has led to little experience or depth of talent on the bench. Injuries, foul trouble, etc. leave us at severe deficit when we must go to the bench, especially in the paint. #2-Motivator and leader. Look at how this season ended to see how he was able to handle team chemistry and discipline issues. We don't have the depth to even sit the offenders on the bench or suspend players. #3- Loves LSU- I'll give him that, but a lot of us do. #4 Other attributes that are lacking in the current coach, IMO are above average bench coach and ability to develop players consistently. #5 Political backers. He was hired because of friends and advocates, not because of resume, IMO. I believe that he won't be fired this year for several reasons, but hoping he will step down. The team quit this year, why shouldn't he? There should be a firing after next season if LSU does not make the NCAA tournament.

Then state who you are and how you know so much. Obviously, you are someone connected to one. In that case, you grow up. Get off message boards and buttering up people.
