Good for you. In May of 2015 I saw a picture of myself and was disgusted at what I had done. I am similar to you, I'm 6'2 and weighed in at 220 at my heaviest. Starting in May, I radically changed the way I ate and by November of 2015 I was in the 180's. I didn't work out a single day during this period, just 100% changed the way I ate.
Make sure you stay consistent on the eating part. Don't deviate from your healthy food until you get to a point that you're happy. Even today, I still eat 80% healthy but I also get to indulge from time to time on pizza, red meat, girl scout cookies, etc....
Good luck. And if you don't go to the gym one day because you don't feel like it, it's ok. Just make sure to continue eating foods that are healthy and the weight will fall off.

I'm trying to lose about 40 pounds but at the same time I am not going completely balls to the wall
I've been eating boiled eggs for breakfast and a rotation of baked chicken/fish/steak for lunch/dinner.
workout wise I get on the bike at the gym for 35 minutes every afternoon on the "cross country" program and then do a variety of upper and lower body workouts

Try not to drop weight too quickly. Sounds weird, but rapid weight loss could lead to medical problems. One example would be, gallbladder problems.

If you have a cheat meal or skip a day exercising, don't let it completely derail you. Everyone has bad days, but being able to wake up the next day with a clean slate and get back to work are the ones that can make it sustainable.
And when you are walking out of the gym and you aren't covered in sweat, you're not pushing yourself in the gym.
