Help needed with praline type topping for sweet potato casserole

I made the sweet potato part and my topping is not coming together - it has 3/4 cup softened butter, 1 cup pecans, 1 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup flour. I am using a pastry cutter to mash it together but instead of the topping becoming crumbly it is more the consistency of dough. What am I doing wrong?
I had this problem before and my MawMaw helped me fix it but sadly she passed earlier this year and I don't remember what she said was my problem. Butter temp perhaps?
Thanks.

Yep cold butter. Crumbled like a pie dough. My 2 cents. Hate the dish, but I think that is what you want.

up the brown sugar by half and melt the butter

What R2R said. You need less flour, so add more butter. Taste for more sugar as you loosen up the little dough ball you created.

Proper ratio from my recipe:
2/3 C. melted "oleo" (yeah, that's how my freaking recipe reads)
1 C. flour
2 C. brown sugar
1 C. chopped pecans.
And yes, melt the butter and pour into your dry ingredients. Trust me, I make this fricking thing like 4 times a year. Somehow I'm the one that gets stuck making it.

Yep. Mix the nuts, sugar and flour then sprinkle over the top. Then drizzle melted butter on and bake.

Sorry for you loss.
Just roll it out, place on top of sweet potatoes and then sprinkle with nuts and a little more butter.

Thanks to all to who took the time to reply. I tried to fix the "the dough ball" that I created but it was to no avail. I ended up starting over and using hogfly's recipe and it came out great.
Hopefully I have better luck with the spinach madeleine, broccoli gratin, artichoke balls, Darla Hood's shrimp mold and Gris Gris' crawfish beignets.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

If you follow the instructions on the beignets, you should be fine. I hope you'll enjoy them. Several other folks here have made them.
Merry Christmas!

Glad it turned out okay this time. Our family is big enough now that I have to do two of them, one with the pecan topping and the other with marshmallows.
Did you do sweet potato recipe that uses real sweet potatoes (boiled and mashed), eggs, vanilla and like a pound of butter? I always cut the sugar in half on that one, because sweet potatoes are sweet enough already, imo.

I used baked sweet potatos, sugar, milk, egg, vanilla and salt in the casserole. It is pioneer woman's recipe for "soul sweet potatos" that I was using.
