Need to hire the beer guy at the cove. Dude knew his shite talking to him last night. Also had the right mindset about tap rotation.

The ratings can be a good guide, but I didn't really start using them until I had tried a lot on my own.. and even now, it's just a rough guide for the best in whatever style I'm in the mood for.

Only time I'll look at ratings is if I'm at a store and something I'm considering buying is expensive. I'm not buying a $15+ bomber I've never heard of without doing a little research. A $5 pint of beer at a bar though I just order away.

Well yeah. I don't know that I've ever looking up a beer at a bar other than getting the name or something to post here

Agree. Made that mistake not too long ago. Put back something that ended up being awesome when I tried it a few weeks later, and chose something that sucked.

To be fair (and make your same point, I guess), they overrate EVERYTHING.

I'd like to see a feature added to BA or RB where you can remove the ratings from locals or anyone from the same State as the brewery.

Local bias plays heavily into the ratings of some beers...

You almost fell asleep at the restaurant the other night, a-hole.

To the OP, the general disdain comes from the entire concept of having 8000 taps. If you have a ton of taps, you pretty much guarantee you're going to have a ton of old taps. And given our distribution here, the quality of your selection is already gonna be limited. I'd rather you have 5 excellent taps that constantly rotate and another 10 or so that are good than 1 or 2 good ones and every local beer produced in an area. I don't need to see Jockamo on draft to satisfy me.

And thay doesn't even touch on how displeasing that sterile atmosphere can be. But I guess I just love refuse.

The distribution curve would still be heavily skewed to the top. People just don't rationally apply the bell curve when rating things that naturally bring them enjoyment.

I'd be curious what the average score on Untappd is. Definitely a lot higher than 2.5.

That's probably true. I'd imagine most of the brews I've rated fall between 3-4 with an very small number falling below 3 or above 4..

Well, it probably helps that many people on untappd are trying to avoid beer that would fall in those lower ranges. I don't find myself issuing many 2 bottle caps or below, but when I taste something that just isn't good, well, it gets rated accordingly. I know that Pastrami on Rye from Pipeworks I tried Saturday was pretty rough in my estimation, and I rated it accordingly. But that's rare that I'd drink something like that.

I had a short day at work yesterday and stopped by World of Beer about 3:00. This location did not have a corporate look. Just looked like a normal bar. It is in an older building downtown. Seemed like a decent atmosphere but it was early and there were only a few other people there.

I think you should find plenty of good beers to drink there. Try to figure out what styles you like and then start experimenting.

I would disagree with what a lot of people are saying about the ratings sites. I would start with beers that get good reviews when trying a new style. The ratings aren't always accurate, but if a beer has 1000 reveiews and rates a 92, then it is probably a good beer for that style. This helps you avoid a scenario where you taste a beer and decide that the style is not for you, when, in fact, you just tried a poor example of that style.

The problem that some on this board (including me) have with places with so many taps is that they go for quanitity over quality, and, because they have so many taps, the beers aren't as fresh as they could be.

For me, the sweet spot on number of taps is about 15 - 25 rotating. Enough that you can have a good variety, but not so many that you get kegs hanging around for months.

I give out tons of 3-3.5s on Untapped, but rarely seem to go less than that unless it's just a bad beer. My grading curve is probably an exponential curve, which I'm sure most people's are.

I don't review beers, but my grades would be higher than normal, because most of the beers I try are either because a.) someone who's opinion I respect has recommended it, b.) it comes from a good brewery, or c.) I have already tasted a sample from the bartender before ordering a pint. In all three cases, I have a pretty good idea that it is a better than average beer before I drink it.

So I would expect that my grades will be on the high side.

If I was going to attempt to try every beer at every taproom in Portland, my liver would give out long before I reached my goal...

This is true. Definitely use the sites. Absolutely. I guess I just meant.. if you look something up, and you see 76%, you think "well 76% is still pretty high". But on those sites, it's rare to find anything lower than 70%.. at least with most anything I've ever looked up personally. So you're dealing with a window of 70%-100% rather than 0%-100% a lot of times.

Abita Amber has a 79%; Jockamo has 76% (out of 1450 votes). But poor OP would likely hate IPAs if he tried Jockamo as a representation of the style.

I use the rating sites when in the store, but I rarely go ahead with anything below the 80s. That's just me personally.

here in Savannah,

Mouton,

I love the place.

Even though it is a chain, it is in an old building on Broughton and has a great local feel. Beer selection is amazing, service is good and the bands are usually really good as well.

The upstairs is quieter and has a big window over looking Broughton.

No food, but you can order takeout from several places and you can bring food in.

You've obviously haven't been to the one here in Savannah.

edit: Should have read the whole thread before responding to one person.

The one here is far from a corporate atmosphere. It's obviously in an old department store. They even left the side display windows. There is a cornhole game set up in one side. On nights when there isn't a band, people play jenga on the stage.

Like I said, I have seen several bands there and always have a good time.

The Distillery is decent. Their beer selection is not huge. Food is pretty good but nothing to get too excited about.

I prefer Crystal Beer Parlor for the food and the beer selection to the Distillery.

Yes. We are on the same page, here. If I was trying a style for the first time, I would get something in the 90's, if I could...

I've had plenty of beers that are rated in the 90's that I thought, "WTF?"... So the ratings are definitely not the final determiner of whether you will like a beer, or not, because, as some people have said, the ratings tend to be skewed to the high side.

I also think that some beers get lowballed a bit because of the brewer. I think Sam Adams could come out with the greatest beer in the world, and the best it would get from some people is, "This doesn't suck as much as I thought it would...".

I am gonna pick up a few new beers to try this afternoon. Can anyone reccomend some good stouts and porters to try? I am pretty sure I am going to try a Founders Breakfast stout and maybe Choklat if they have them.
