Only one I ever hooked was at the rocks while fishing the outside of SW pass. Hooked on bottom and it ran hard straight at the rocks. I thought it was a shark until it jumped completely out of the water. Easily 100+ and everyone in the boat saw it, then my line went slack.
Went to Canaveral 2 summers ago and they were all around the boat, but would not bite anything.

I recommend Boca Grande Pass in West Florida. May and June are prime time and there are hundreds if not thousands of them piled up there (and at least that many fishermen too). I've hooked a few and they are a blast...

At age 8 I watched my Dad fight a 160lb tarpon for 2+ hours in the Galveston area. He got put in the paper for it - circa '92-'93. It was 6' long.
He was sore for a week after that. All i remember is the adults kept telling my brother/I to get out of the way.
To answer your question, i have no desire to be hooked up on one of those.

In Texas you have to pay money to keep a tarpon. I just looked at the pic of this beast, my dad/his friend were so tired they only have about 4 foot of the tarpon lifted out of the water.
Dad kept 1 scale as a souvenir. I remember at age 8 that scale was as big as my hand. If someone gives me their TD email address, I'll send pic for you to post.

Shallow Water Expeditions out of Watercolor, FL in the Old Florida Outfitters store specialize in large tarpon on fly in the panhandle. David Mangum owns the guide service and is one of the best guides in Florida IMO. He was recently featured in Garden & Gun Magazine.

First and only one I ever caught ended up getting me on the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo board. Very fun fish to fight when they come out of the water and everything, but the fishing is so boring when you aren't seeing the fish roll. Trolling coon-pops aimlessly at 1-2 knots for 8 hours isn't the funnest thing in the world. It's very tough fishing out of Louisiana also. Big fish, but they are hard to hook.

Where at? Little Gasparilla Island? I know quite a few people who own houses there....
And Boca Grande is definitely the place to catch them.
