Ya gotta look beyond statistical rankings.

thats hypocrisy cause you and the other garrett lovers point to a single statistic ALL THE TIME. Looking beyond like I did in this thread shows he's been very under par in the league for 5 years now. USWIDT?

The problem isnt the amount of kicks tht the misses, for he has a percentage close to the nfl average.

The problem is the situation of the kicks when he DOES miss

Hes 30 yards and under percentage is unacceptable, and alot of thise 30 and under yarders that he misses are kicks that could have won the game

finding a good kicker is hard.

Hartley has been more than solid. I'd rather keep him than have another Olindo MAre come in, or even Kasay who cant hit past 40yards

I'd say he's been very below averageish with his play lately. I hope we can call them growing pains and the coaching staff sees some professional maturity as well as consistency growth this year. But replacing a guy who's performance is in the mid 20's year in and year out in the league is easily replaceable... just maybe hard to significantly upgrade. Which if that's the case, we can go a cheaper route for sure.

get nervous when Hartley is kicking an important 35 yarder

Same here, can't remember the last time the Saints lined up for a field goal and I had confidence in the kicker. Hartley had a good 2009 playoffs, but that's about it.

This really is the offseason, isn't it! Jeez.

He'll be okay.

ETA: I named the stray dog I adopted after the NFC final after him . . . Hartley

There's the career % list for every NFL kicker.

Hartley only has 7 guys ahead of him. If you live in Chad's skewed world where you don't count his 13 for 13 season, he has 30 guys ahead of him.

That's in the history of the NFL.

For some frame of reference, the 50th kicker has 77.3%. 75th has 73.3%. 100th has 67.8%.

Again this is in the history of the NFL.

Like I said, if we find someone better then great. But he has held a solid 81% in his last 3 years. It's not like you can snap your fingers and find someone better and kickers are streaky as hell. Him holding 81.8%, 80%, and 81.8% over 3 years shows consistency.

If he drops off I have no doubt Payton will cut him, but let's wait for that to happen or for us to actually find another guy before we call for a solid kicker's head.

Edit:
Another tidbit, only 13 kickers have finished their career at 80% or better. Only 9 of them had careers longer than 10 years.
