Since they have it in their offseason thread
quote:

Denard Span has been linked to the Nationals in trade rumors dating back to mid-2011 and the Twins finally pulled the trigger today, sending the 28-year-old center fielder to Washington for pitching prospect Alex Meyer.

quote:

Span fits what the Nationals were looking for both offensively and defensively, as he’s a prototypical leadoff man with good on-base skills and speed who covers plenty of ground in center field. This year he hit .283 with a .342 on-base percentage in 128 games and Span has a career OBP of .357. He’s under team control through 2015 at reasonable prices, making $20.25 million over the three seasons.

Meyer was the Nationals’ first-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Kentucky and the 6-foot-9 right-hander with a mid-90s fastball had a strong pro debut this year, throwing 129 innings with a 2.86 ERA and 139/45 K/BB ratio between two levels of Single-A. He’s certainly not MLB-ready yet, but could be ready at some point in 2014 and the Twins have been desperate to find some hard-throwing starters with top-of-the-rotation potential.

Just glancing at the thread title, I thought this would be about a bridge of some sorts. I need to actually read these things more carefully.

That's a pretty awesome get for the Nats. His contract is a steal. Sounds like a good move for the Twins as well, forgot about Meyer.

They have enough prospects just few MLB ready studs the Marlins would want but they do have cold hard cash that Loria loves more than winning

As someone who has watched Denard for his entire major league career, the Nationals are getting a great guy and a great glue player.

He's a quality lead off guy who has really suffered because the Twins have not been able to slot in reliable guys in the 2 hole, except when they juggled Mauer up there periodically. He's going to go hard, play through minor injuries, and otherwise going to be the maximum effort kind of guy that every team needs.

I'll miss seeing him in a Twins uniform.

IMO that deal is a win-win. Both teams get something that will be more useful for them than what they gave up. Nats have needed a centerfielder/leadoff guy for years now. The price was pretty steep, but Span has a cheap contract.

I would assume this means that one of Morse or LaRoche is gone.

Not sure if serious???

A little over 5 million a year for 2 years with an option in final year. Better move than dropping the 70-80 million required to bring in Upton for 5 years, ultimately burying their prospect Goodwin that is going to take over after Span.

Now they have room to go after another starting pitcher.
