Never underestimate the desire to live and fight to the death....and a lesson I learned from a poster on here....Never Touch a live deer

WAFB

DRY CREEK, LA (KPLC) -

For many like Chad Hebert of Beauregard Parish, hunting has been a way of life since he was a boy.

With years of experience under his belt, nothing could have prepared him for his close brush with death on Sunday when he fought -- unarmed -- a deer while hunting with his sons.

"It was the scariest situation I've ever been in" Hebert said. "I just thought my life is over. This monster is just going to maul the mess out of me."

It all happened after Hebert's son, 13-year-old Gavin, shot a 10-point deer. After tracking the deer, Hebert happened upon a thicket where he obviously wasn't alone.

"He just hopped up and charged me. His antler stuck just below my knee," Hebert said. "As I was scooting back, I just held its antlers trying to break its neck."

While Hebert struggled with the deer's antlers, Gavin worked to get the deer off of his dad. Once that happened, Hebert said the deer ran about 10 steps before collapsing.

After being hospitalized for two days, Hebert now walks with a noticeable limp and still has scars from his fight. He said even though he has hunted all his life, he learned tons of lessons through his latest experience.

"Never track a deer unarmed," Hebert said. "I'm just so thankful to God because it could have been so much worse."

Hear more from the Heberts and we'll revisit the "battleground" on later editions of 7News.

People sometimes laugh, but I've got a pistol on my hip at all times in the woods.

Choirboy can attest to this.

Great Idea. I've had to kill a few with my hands...its tough, they don't die easy.

I went nearly exactly 17 years without touching a live deer after my incident....

and only because Lil Choupique was involved......

now he's on his own...

I've had that happen before. My Dad pushed me out of the way before the buck skewered me. That was my first trophy buck, too.

+1000000

People think I'm crazy for doing it too. You just don't know what you will encounter in the wild. It's best to have a compact weapon at the ready on your side.

I do know him. I've always heard stories like this, but it seems crazy to actually know someone who got attacked by a deer. That's why my arse never walks in the woods without a gun.

This. My neighbor told me they saw a big black bear Sunday afternoon in the same exact spot my 10 year old granddaughter and I were standing Saturday afternoon while we were at the foot of Clinch Mountain splitting firewood. Not too worried about a bear bothering me, but a small, 10 year old little girl might be tempting to a big bear. It has happened before...
