How to become cable independent?

Looking for recommendations on a good cable free system. I know it's been discussed before, but I can't find it.

A friend does it with torrents for shows and streaming Netflix and ESPN through his Xbox. Sporting events are his biggest hang ups, but usually goes out to a local bar/eatery to catch those in action.

Buy an HD antenna. Watch network TV. Torrent a shitload of shows. Call it a day.

Buy this antenna, www.gomohu.com, use XBOX, AppleTV, Roku to stream Netflix, Hulu whatever you want.
We've been cable free for about 3 months now and loving life. I have an XBOX in one room and AppleTV in the other and two mohu leaf anteanna's and get 22 HD over air channels.

Really there is no way to become "cable independent" in terms of internet access unless you are fortunate enough to live in a city with fiber optic access; DSL over phone lines sucks and is not a viable option for me. But yes, if you have fast internet access, there are plenty of good alternatives to cable television as long as you don't mind watching stuff delayed which I prefer to avoid commercials.

Did this about a month ago. We bought a Roku and the Leaf antenna from Amazon. Pay $7.99 for Hulu Plus(carries most of the shows we watch), we get Amazon Prime anyway, so access to their instant videos for free, free Netflix and HBOgo...pay Cox about $50 for Internet. Bill went from $200 a month to $58. Haven't missed cable yet and I'm up to date on all of my shows.

You can buy a jailbroken Apple tv on eBay with all kinds of differents apps preloaded on it.

We tried to do it but it's impossible when you...
1)Live in an area where there are only a few local stations like Biloxi.
2)You have a crappy internet provider
and
3) You are a diehard sports fan.
We would've been able to do it when we lived near Orlando because the towers were only 20 miles away and had to cover 9 counties so we got about 32 digital channels on antenna and had AT&T internet which partnered with ESPN3 via XBox. But when we moved to Keesler AFB two years ago, we only get 8 digital channels with 3 networks (soon to be 5 networks come July with CBS and NBC coming). We had to stay with Directv and Cable One who is not a partner with ESPN3 was our only choice for internet since AT&T didn't build infrastructure in all of base housing for DSL or U-Verse.

A) Have a friend with Netflix, get his info, and stream.
B) Have another friend with HBO, get his info, and stream using HBOGo.
C) Hulu
D) Project free tv
E) Profit
