We stayed here as well. It doesn't have AC, but the weather is pretty temperate there so that wasn't a problem. It's a gorgeous property with lots of hiking trails, free guided hikes, etc. But it is a really miserable drive down a very bad road. It takes about 20 minutes to go the short distance because the road is just full of potholes. Most roads in Costa Rica aren't this way! We were still glad we stayed here as we took advantage of most of the trails that were free.
Maybe the road is better than 3 years ago!

There are some nice resorts in San Jose if you’re looking for R&R. Good access to volcanoes and other outdoor stuff.

We went to Costa Rica last January for the first time. It was awesome. I ended up booking the trip through their own travel agency and I highly recommend using them. Very easy to use and they were very responsive. I booked some excursions through them and some on my own. I checked around once I got there and found their prices were on par with what I would have gotten on my own.
At worst you can check out the site and they will set up a sample itinerary. They had us picked up from the airport snd travel was arranged for us every day we were there.

San Jose has great restaurants and bars all over and tremendous hiking and plenty of parks and recreation areas. Since my gf lives there, she knows all the spots . Lots and lots of outdoor stuff to do so if you know your way around it’s awesome. That said, I’d go to La Fortuna or Manuel Antonio with the kids since it’s quintessentially Costa Rica . My comments were more for an adult and as a statement of how much I personally enjoy San Jose.
I would also recommend day trips - like ATV or Tortuga Island etc.

Dang near rattle all of our teeth out! But yes, definitely worth it and we also weren't bothered by the no AC. Felt great with just the screens closed on the windows/doors.

We just took our family to to RIU Guanacaste. Three kids 12/9/6 and we had a great time. We found a tour operator that works on the beach who was much better than the group that works out of the hotel. We would go back in a second.

I think manuel antonio(beach), monteverde(cloud forest), and arenal(volcano) is a great trip that gives you 3 different sceneries easily done in a week or so.
monteverde is my favorite spot in costa rica.

Following. Looking into a Caribbean trip as well. Wife really wants all-inclusive but I’d prefer to hop around with a rental car.

screw an all inclusive... especially in costa rica. all the cool shite there... no way am I being locked in a compound.

Absolutely! Of all the places, don't do AI here. It's safe, cheap, gorgeous, and most of the best things to do and see are not where the big AI resorts are.

Trying to decide what’s next after Fortuna and Arenal NP. Do we go northwest towards Tamarindo or southwest towards Manuel Antonio?
Probably can’t go wrong with either decision….

I second renting a house near Manuel Antonio. Took my kids (14 & 11 at the time). National park there is amazing with sloths & monkeys. Beach is great. Lots of good places to eat. We did a day doing a waterfall tour (jumping off waterfalls) that my girls still talk about.

My wife and I have been twice. Our first trip was to Mal Pais. We stayed at Casa Chameleon which was owned by one of the original Baywatch girls. She was there and we had a nice visit with her. To the south is Montezuma which was great. Very near Mal Pais is Santa Teresa. It is a fine place. We rented a car and drove everywhere. We flew into San Jose and took a commuter airline into Tambor where we picked up our rental car. The second trip was to Jaco. It is more developed and maybe a little more to do. We rode horses in the mountains and rented a side by side ATV one day. We thoroughly enjoyed it there but preferred Mal Pais.

I'd go Manuel Antonio. Tamarindo is a fun little town with gorgeous resorts and beaches in the area. But it's extremely touristy. There are lots of expats in the area and pretty much everyone in town spoke English and wanted to be paid in US $$$. Tamarindo if all you want to do is lay on a gorgeous beach at your resort and spend half a day shopping. Manuel Antonio if you want to do anything else. Because it was so touristy and resort like, Tamarindo was more expensive.

hit monteverde first, then manual antonio. monteverde is badass. very unique place.

While ours was not AI, but yet we were on Papagayo...they do let you out of the compound if you want out.
For us, Papagayo was exactly what we wanted at the moment in time.

Mal Pais and Montezuma…and Cabo Blanco…is the must-do in CR. No other region really compares as far as immersion goes.
Puerto Viejo down south on the Caribbean coast is special too.

It is. I was there in May, the road is newly paved. It was a nice surprise compared to the crappy gravel road that used to be there.

We did La Fortuna and Jaco splitting the week between both. Had a blast! Inland is much cheaper than the coast. We can’t wait to go back in the next year or two.
