Ironically if LSU had hired Petrino or Nutt, saban likely would’ve had a landing spot here in 2007 as petrino went to the nfl at that time and nutt wouldn’t have done well enough to justify keeping him in all likelihood

But we got The Hat and sure showed old Saban didn’t we fellas

My question is whether we could have hired Saban when he left the Dolphins

Absolutely

He wanted to come back. There was no justification or testicular fortitude to make the move of cutting Miles loose after his first two years though.

Its pretty well known saban reached out to LSU about coming back. He has openly said he regrets leaving.

But we had skip and his ego as the AD, so he sure showed Nick.

No doubt we got the better end of that deal anyway. Saban is an a-hole. We had a good family man running our program

Yes we could have, but that would have been one hell of a difficult thing to do considering how he left and Miles was only going into his third year. The PR would have been a nightmare. Obviously in hindsight it would have worked out, but then?

Is there such a thing as a more stubborn and less evolved coach?

I respectfully disagree with this. All we knew about Les is that he upset OU a couple of times. His very first game, the comeback against Arizona, was typical Les b.s.-unorganized...etc

Sounds like several top-shelf prospects were missed by timing (Urban, Spurrier, Del Rio).

The stuff that has come to light regarding Les had tarnished what respect I had left for him. That said, had someone told us at the end of '04 that our next HC would in the next decade:
- Win a NC
- play for another
- win 2 SEC titles
- win 3 SECW titles
- Never win less than 8 games

We would have all been pleased. The SEC dominance had not materialized. Saban was a fledgling NFL coach. But that was then.

Jimbo Fisher

I still can't believe that Bertman would actually hire the bumbling and future sexual predator, Les Miles over Jimbo Fisher, but he did.

And when that second-half collapse against Tennessee happened in Les Miles first game in Tiger Stadium, I knew right then and there Bertman had royally fricked up.

I remember when he interviewed Petrino, Skip pretty much said no way. I was mad at the time because I wanted Petrino.

Knowing what I know now about Petrino, Skip was right.

Miles was a better than avg coach and did a good job keeping in state talent. Then Nicky blew him out the league (and he got old). Hoping CEO can keep it going above .750

Dunno if it was just people talking about something they didn’t know but I seem to remember hearing Kirk ferentz name. Of course he beat saban on that bomb in his last game.

Blame Will Muschamp for that. Muschamp thought he was Jimbo's equal or better and bitched the whole week to anybody who would listen that he deserved an interview

I vividly remember this. Who was he even asking? This is the first of his many WTF moments and we just let it slide because he won 10 games a year with the best talent in the nation. Sad.

Miles was a basement hire. Bertman was trying to save pennies.
