After months of secret talks, the breakaway teams — which include Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Manchester United and Liverpool in England, and Juventus and A.C. Milan in Italy — could make an announcement as early as Sunday, according to multiple people familiar with the plans.

The timing of the announcement appears designed to overshadow Monday’s plan by European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, to ratify a newly designed Champions League, a competition which would be decimated by the departure of its biggest teams.

36 teams playing a 10 game group stage with 1-8 getting a bye to the last 16 and 9th-22nd having a playoff for the final 8 spots, also adding 2 “wild card” spots for teams with the highest coefficient that don’t qualify directly but still qualified for Europe (example, Liverpool finishes 5th but still makes CL)

I was told by many that City would lead the way in the death of modern football, yet here we are.

Going to be awkward trying to tell the biggest clubs in the world they are banned from playing games...

So so dumb. Is the penance for gen-X growing up in the GOAT having to live our final prime adult years in such a bozo world?

No one should be surprised that a bunch of billionaire foreigners want no part of fighting for Champions League spots and risking relegation.

It’s a shame but tradition and competition mean nothing to these people.

We knew United’s owners were scumbags from the start

Liverpool on the other hand slow rolled us

Not when the payout for this new competition is 10x or more than what's currently offered

Here’s a question- would this competition even be compelling?

In a two-leg knockout format, there’s more chaos than a league format. I think in most seasons there will be a few pretty clear cut favorites in the table like in domestic competitions.

But domestic competitions have European Qualification and relegation to keep things interesting. I think this “super league” would almost have to go with a more American playoff format.
