any good places for mariscos in baton rouge? you would think that with its proximity to the gulf and lake pontchartrain, br should have some decent places.

Shrimp dishes (ceviche, paella) are available at a few taco shops and at La Reyna, but I don't eat shrimp so I couldn't tell you if they were any good or not. My buddy liked the shrimp cocktail at Juanita's off of Sherwood. Los Gallos got a pretty good review by the Advocate with respect to their spicy shrimp dishes.

I used to get the whole fried fish at Los Gallos, but have almost all but stopped eating fried food since last year. I do get the grilled fish at La Reyna sometimes, the fish tacos there are great (come with rice and beans).

I'm not too big on seafood at Latin restaurants, I'd rather stick to local seafood places if I'm going to eat out.

My 2nd trip to Taco and Burrito Express today. As I thought, it turns out that they do everything from scratch there, including the refried beans, you can really taste the difference. The jalapenos are the only thing they get canned.

Tried the King Burrito Plain again, but this time with steak ($4.99). Beans, lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, and juicy chunks of slightly seasoned steak. Awesome burrito, so far they're 2/2 for the burritos.

Had the torta de milanesa (sandwich with breaded steak, refried beans, lettuce, cheese, sour cream, avocado slices.) Steak was more thin than I had expected, but tasted good. I could only get a few bites in of half of it, I was already full from the burrito.

Plenty of non-Spanish speakers were there today, and ordering from the drive through as well. I wish it was closer to campus, but it's not a bad drive on I-12.

Are they making their own tortillas? Both flour and corn?

It's just a name. You let me know when you can order a grilled steak, a whole fried fish, tamales, or grilled shrimp from a "fast food" place.

A restaurant that had a technical problem with their equipment. I guess you missed that great big sign on the front door I read today that said (in English) "Our Credit Card Machine is Down Today."

Waffle House isn't fast food, and last time I checked, they don't accept credit cards.

It took years for Juanita's to consider accepting credit cards, and they also had a store and butcher shop to boot. If the majority of your customer base doesn't carry credit cards, debit cards (let alone have a bank account), getting a card machine and paying fees probably isn't on the top of your priority list. This new place has the equipment, it just wasn't working.

Is the credit thing just temporary? I was there yesterday and saw that sign and left without stepping foot in the place.. I also do not and never will consider waffle house a restaurant..

Afreaux, I really respect your post and don't doubt your knowledge on these subjects, thats why I really look forward to your review of La Mexicana ... I'd love to know which steak burrito you find to be better ?

Went again to TBE with the wife today...
Had the pozole (especial del dia)
It kicked arse.
Also had a taco al pastor (killer) and lengua (average)
Wife had a queen size carne asada burrito plate.
Washed it down with an horchata. It was damned good.
Pozole was spicy and helped clear my head from this summer cold I've picked up.
This place is solid, if not spectacular.

I asked them about it, I think they said that Monday someone was supposed to look into fixing it for them.

That's a good little drive for me, I'll have to wait until I'm already out in that neck of the woods before I eat there. Also, I try to only eat red meat once every few weeks, so it would be a couple before I try them.

I'll definitely try it, then. I've never liked horchata, for some reason, though everyone seems to love that stuff.

There were plenty of non-Spanish speakers there when I went on Saturday, the location seems to be good for through-traffic. Juanita's is only a few blocks away, but on a hidden side street, you would never know that place was there unless someone told you about it.

Ok someone's gonna have to go back and try the tripe. I'm usually a "try anything once" kind of guy, but I dunno... Also, is the tongue any good?

Alright Afreaux, I'm planning on hitting this place up, but I have some questions. Are you served chips and salsa with your meal, or do I need to get an appetizer? Which Mexican coke is the best? Should I opt for chicken or steak burrito (I'm a steak man, but I hear the chicken is awesome)?

And finally an unrelated question...where in BR can I get a good seafood burrito?

If you sit down to eat, you automatically get chips and fresh salsa they make from scratch that day.

I don't drink soda. But from what others have posted, they've been serving the Mexican Coca-Cola made from cane sugar in the bottle.

For only $4.99 a King Burrito, try chicken the first day and steak the day after. Both were great when I had them.

I don't eat shrimp, so I couldn't give you an honest answer. For what it's worth, a lot of people seem to think that Mestizo's offers some really good Latin-Cajun seafood fusion dishes.

I've had the Mexican Coca Cola, which is pretty good but a little sweet (I quit soda years ago but still have it once in a blue moon). there's an orange one called Mandarin that has a more natural taste to it and is not as sweet. I recommend it.

Afreaux-

Thanks for the heads up... I had the steak tacos today. This place is legit.

Had Ninfa's twice last week and the taco's I had today blew both meals from ninfa's out of the water.
