IMO, I think Rey Maualuga from USC is better than both of them..even though it pains me to give USC credit...

Watch this video, and tell me if you think the best MLB in the game lets a WR (Early Doucet, in motion before the snap) block him out of the play this easily. Seems to me he let a guy about 35 pounds lighter take him out of the play with not much of a fight:

Beckwith is better than JL because he doesn't get blown up by linemen and half of the tackles he got credit for that I saw were him diving in on a play that was practically dead. I can have a 100 tackles that way, let your teammates get the job done and get credit for it because you are a overhyped player

OK so we have seen JL getting schooled by Hester, Dickson and even last year's worst olineman Stewart....but a receiver? Seriously?

Any OSU fan will tell you that the list of great OSU linebackers goes Hawk and Katzenmoyer pretty much even with a big gap then probably JL. I love how you make a big deal about one block by a WR. Doucet was almost at full speed while JL was shuffling and ready to turn and pursue a tackle. I don't care how light a guy is. Full speed against half speed. It was a great block. I've seen OSU receivers light up great defensive players before. Hartline gets at least one pancake a game crashing down on linebackers. Big fricking deal. If Laurinaitis is so overrated as everyone is making him out to be then why were the New England Patriots all over his balls hoping he'd skip his senior season so they could pick him up with the 8th pick?

Are you out of your freaking mind?

I guess any Buckeye fan that's 12 might have Hawk and Katzenmoyer at the top of their list but any sane Buckeye fan that knows just a little history might just rank these guys at least as high or higher.

Chris Spielman
Randy Gradishar
Marcus Marek
Pepper Johnson
Tom Cousineau
Steve Tovar

Hawk and Katzenmoyer were great linebackers at Ohio State but they only continued the tradition. Lautinaitis is doing a tremendous job and his name will belong in the mix when he's done.

No, I just hate people saying JL is terribly overrated. And yes, in my life span the only dominant OSU linebackers I've watched were the Big Kat, Hawk, and JL. I was a young tot during Speilman's OSU years so I don't really think about him or other great OSU linebackers before him. While I've heard many stories about all those people you've mentioned, the only one I really hear people thought stood out about the rest was Cousineau.

The only thing I really know about JL is from the BCSCG. And, having watched the game a number of times now, I didn't come away from the game thinking "wow, that dude is for real".

Maybe just a bad game for him.

For comparison, I thought Grant (OLB) had a very good game for Ohio State, and Gholston played quite well (although LSU schemed to neutralize him, like with the quick pitches outside of his rush). And against VT, despite the 48-7 beat down, CB Brandon Flowers had a great game for them. JL just didn't have much influence on this game, IMO.

Can't compare, not many play's get to our lb's. I will say that JL is like a Dunston that make's the tackle. 18 in the ship is great but don't say much for the d-line!!!

Frankly, I thought he got owned quite a few times. Getting 17 tackles, (15 of them in the secondary behind you), is not impressive.

Smack talking aside, this is a pretty interesting question b/c it seems to me that they are pretty different players. I would need to see Ohio State play more, but I do think that DB is much closer to JL than many elsewhere in the country might think. One thing about DB is that the DL in front of him soaked up a lot of blockers, and it seems like the NFL liked JL more correct? Frankly, neither just floors me like Patrick Willis did when I would watch him at Ole Miss. That guy was a beast.
