When did this obsession with Disney begin?

I have a family member that has become obsessed with Disney. Everything has to be Disney and they make "pilgrimages" to Disney World far more frequently than the average person. They have a 10 year old girl that has been there 6 times already, currently there for the second time this year alone. They surprised her with a trip to Disney as her big gift for Christmas at our family gathering and she broke down in tears because she had already been and the parents absolutely do entirely too much, even stated this past summer that she "needed a vacation from their vacation".

I see this stuff on social media all the time - is this just a way to project pride on Facebook now for 30 and 40 year olds? I see a few parents doing this as if the whole world becomes jealous. I don't get it.

I just wonder how people afford that shite. Granted, I’m not an OT baller.

My buddy took his wife and daughter there a few months ago and said he could’ve taken them to Hawaii for cheaper

I don’t get the appeal of going to spend a frick ton of money to hang among the lowest common denominator - the American public.

I had a cousin die of cancer. She was in her late 20s and this was in the mid 90s. She was obsessed with Disney, she ended up going as many times as she could in between treatments. I mean it was her favorite place on Earth. Its been around for awhile, but the more shite they buy up the more people get on board,

Why do you care so much what other adults spend their money on?

I don't get why people spends a frick ton of money every year fishing and hunting, but I don't start threads to bitch about it.

Have you been?

I have and it is an experience. Do I have a desire to go again? Maybe once.

The "cult" begins with the staff. They are ate up with it. Place is crawling with people. Find litter on the ground. They are all over it. It is spotless.

I took my kids there once. Never again, nor did they ask to go again. Total stand in line ripoff. We’ve had many more satisfying vacations since.

It’s an immersive experience geared towards children. Kids are legitimately happy and filled with joy at Disney. If you don’t understand the obsession, you’re beyond reason.

Do you have the same issue with a family who purchases season tickets, a motorhome pass, and a a motorhome to tailgate and attend LSU games? I mean they do this 8 weekends a year, year after year...

They could do many other things with the potentially tens of thousands per year spent to do this.

Who gives a flying f$ck how often and where they go.

For the record- I’m not saying Disney is the be all-end-all vacation spot, but I get why some people like it.

I know a couple in their 60s that have gone annually for the longest. They claim to absolutely love the park. Once was enough for me. There was nothing there that I needed to go back to see.

I'd say about October 1, 1971.

I hate to break it to you, but there is a huge Disney swingers thing going. There are set dates they go and meet up for "fun".

Pretty obvious why they keep going back

I’ve been once. Right after the wife and I married. Stepkids were 7 and 3. Got back home and my step daughter said next time we go that she’s riding up front. I told her next time she went she could drive. We never went back.

My Step daughter is grown with kids now and she doesn’t care about going back. We just never understood the hype.

Went to Diney on my honeymoon in 87 , wife got a great deal and we were poor, it was ok.. went back around 2000 with my daughter, this time liked it even less, went last year with extended family and pretended we enjoyed it. I much prefer Universal never had a bad time there. My brother’s family are card carrying Disney cultists, to each his own.
