Taking my middle son hunt in the AM as MS youth season opens tomorrow. He will be instructed to double shoulder anything that walks out within range. If he pulls to the left he hits neck junction, pulls to the right he hits lungs. With a 9 year old behind the trigger I want him to have the best chance of success. I will gladly sacrifice a few pounds of shoulder meat for that.

What if the deer is facing the opposite way?

How many gut shot deer have you found within 60 yards of the shot? If i'm looking at a good buck, I'm breaking him down through both shoulders. If it's anything that wont go on my wall, I don't breakdown shoulders. I like to watch my dogs track. Simple as that. I have never intentionally gut shot any animal. Bunch of liberal pussies. It's a shame I have to explain myself on a fricking outdoor forum.

I wasnt disagreeing with you. If I see a monster buck and I can get a somewhat lethal shot, Im taking it. That BS of having to make a perfect shot on an animal you may never see again is for the birds. You cant kill them if you dont shoot and a Big buck crossing a shooting lane with his nose to the ground will selsom ever give an ideal shot. You either take the shot then or let him walk for someone else to shoot.

A guy we used to hunt with trophy hunted on our lease. He killed some nice ones and we didnt have tracking dogs back then. Whatever part of the deer was presented to him he shot. Guts, arse, front, it didnt matter. He always said if you dont shoot you cant kill it and the chances of seeing him again is slim to none. He came back empty handed a few times because he couldnt find it due to a poorly placed shot. Nowadays having a dog makes a big difference. People can call that unethical, its still hunting.

Bow hunting is unethical compared to rifles because there are many deer shot with bows that were never recovered.

Not trying to get into a debate with you on this subject, but my dogs find about 40% of deer shot with a rifle and about 80% shot with a bow. I think the reason on this is because anytime a hunter pulls the trigger and finds blood or hair, they're convinced its a fatal shot. They can't see the impact of a rifle. Also, with a gun, I'm generally their last resort. They've spent hours tromping around the woods, pushing the deer and some will put their house dog on it. This puts unnecessary scent in the woods. When someone shoots a deer with a bow, they see the hit. If it's terrible they don't call me. If it's gut shot we wait till the next day. This results in higher odds of finding the deer.

I was talking about before the use of dogs though. I would bet good money that before tracking dogs were easily accessible, that bow hunters lost way more deer than rifle hunters.

Those calibers are too old. They can't compare to the magic of the 6.5cm.

260 and CM are almost ballistic twins. No drop off one to another. CMs just happen to be the glamour cartridge this year

I know. The 2 are exactly the same. So why did Hornady invent something that was already there? I guess they didnt like Remington and wanted to make their own name. It worked because 6.5cm is the fad right now.

. The creedmoor has the ability to not seat the bullet as deep which is suppose to help with accuracy and still be able to use a short action (which is suppose to be more accurate than a long action)

The CM has been the glamour cartridge for the last 5-6 years. Hate to break it you but it’s here to stay. I have one I use for deer hunting now. Not that I think it’s a lot better than a 6.5 x 55 or a .260 but the fact that factory ammo is more plentiful and available across a broad range of options compared to the other two. Not that I ever have but if I needed to, CM ammo is in Walmart. The other two, not so much.

I picked up a Savage in 6.5 credemore a couple years ago when they had it at $199 after rebate. Just got around to using it today. 110# doe, hit a rib on entry and shredded both lungs.

It's definitely enough gun, and does not kick even when sighting in. (None of them kick on hu ding shots.) I Glad I have it as a second deer rifle.

I may replace the Bushnell; I like my Leopolds much better.

Rant [on]

The gun industry is annoying these days, particularly the creedmore and blackout. Having tactical sounding names sells both of those calibers.

The blackout really chaps my arse. The .300 whisper has been around forever, and the blackout is the exact same cartridge. The guy who made the whisper long ago isnt getting shite from all of the .300 blackout rifles and rounds being sold.

6.5x55 was one of the original smokeless military rounds in the world and does everything the creedmore does except a little better. It came out in the 1800's! The 260 rem has been around a damn long time and does everything the creedmore does except have a tactical name. The .260 nor the swede have ever been all that popular, and the creedmore is probably outselling .308's these days.

357 sig gets downloaded to 9mm levels so ammo companies can use 9mm bullets in it, and the sig fades away because now it doesnt do anything a 9mm +p doesnt do. Loaded to proper specs it blows the 9mm away but the ammo companies dont want to make a separate bullet to hold together.
