Moving young family to Houston

Baws,
Moving my family wife and 2 kids under 2yo to the Houston area for a job downtown. Wanting to raise them in a nice neighborhood but can’t afford the upper tier baw lifestyle. Typical mid income level budgets. Probably $300,000 for a mortgage is doable.
Can any of you point me to neighborhoods we would find within our budget? I know commuting might be an issue. More worried about a better place to live than commute.
Many thanks.

Couldn’t find a job in Louisiana?

That's a pretty decent commute from downtown. Unfortunately there are some pretty sketchy areas surround parts of downtown Houston. Like the 3rd ward.

Woodlands is roughly 45 to an hour away from downtown. So if you're tryin to drive thru that crap every morning I wouldn't suggest it.
Washington Ave has some pretty decent town homes. Most of them are new models and builds.
The Heights is actually the newest (from what I recall) remodeled area in the H. Three story town homes/condos. They've basically gentrified the area.
Montrose is also a good area. Its about 5-10 minutes from downtown, not as congested with traffic.
Most homes in these areas are like $250-350k. Some are higher than that but thats due to the area mostly and how new it is.

You in Denver now? I would think Houston would be a good bit less expensive for you.

Burbs are your friend. Woodlands/Spring, Pearland, Cypress, Katy, Kingwood. All have good school districts. Commute will vary, but expect 45 min on a good day.

Pearland, ok. But for decent house with room for a young family, you're no where near $300k for most homes in Montrose or the Heights.

If you want/need 3000 sq ft and a reasonable yard, you cannot get into anything that is in a good neighborhood and isn't in need of significant repairs in the Heights or really anywhere inside the 610 loop (or maybe even inside the Sam Houston Tollway). Townhomes or 1,500 foot older ranch houses with small yards maybe. Friend of mine sold his renovated, 3000 sq ft home in the Heights for nearly $1M and he has another he's renovated and about to put up for a similar price. I think he paid in the mid-300s for each and they needed help.
I'd say you'll need to commute - look at the Woodlands (the WL is still expensive), Tomball, Spring, Kingwood, Pearland, and Sugarland. Each will be a healthy commute. I live in Tomball and it's about 30 if you leave by 6 am and 30 home either before 3:30 pm or after 7:00 pm. Otherwise, an hour.

The Woodlands
Kingwood
Clear Lake/Friendswood
Sugar Land
Spring/Cypress
Katy
Pearland (East side) - Easiest commute from the burbs, but still 30-40 minutes.
In that order, IMO, as far as great burbs. Most of it depends on your tolerance for a commute to downtown.
You can get plenty of house for $300k in all of those places. Great ISD's.

There's a killer deal at 7815 Harding Street. Your commute shouldn't be bad either. Not so sure about the schools though.

Kids that arent in school yet?? Wife working or staying at home?
Rent something close to work bud. Do it for a couple yrs. Get familiar with the area better, and you can be there for your wife/kids more, not sitting in your car commuting. Once established, and use to it all then find a place. Perhaps by then you can afford more.
Good luck.

Great point. I missed that.
Renting in the loop is very doable if you don't have to worry about sending kids to school.
