re: Is the P-51 Mustang the best looking aircraft of all time?

They were nicknamed the "Ensign Eliminator" for that very reason. That long nose hid the deck from the view of the aviator so it was difficult to have the proper angle of attack and still see. I guess they could have 'crabbed' it in a bit(flying sideways to see out the side) and kicked enough rudder at the last second to straighten her up.

Lots of military aircraft on Veterans day.
But the best looking aircraft of all time were during the Golden Age of flight. For me, it's the Schneider Trophy seaplane racers of the 20's and 30's.

It’s a tossup between the P-51 and F4E Phantom for me. Used to play the Chuck Yeagar computer game a lot as a kid and these were always my favorite.

I like the Spitfire better. The bubble canopy on the P-51 doesn't do it for me.

Had Germany mass produced the me 262, our airforce might have had a difficult time against this jet.

Lot's of good planes here. These are not the best looking, but a sign of US dominance.
One says we can sneak in and bomb you without knowing, the other says we are just going to carpet bomb your arse because we own the skies.
The sexiness of the SR-71 though

My grandfather flew a P-51 in WWII out of england. He said that when you fired the 50 cals you could feel the airplane bump backwards.

meaning the F-16 would quickly outmaneuver any other type of aircraft it went against.
depends on whose flying it baw, seen quite a few 4(Vipers) v. 1(Phantom) kills by crusty old VN vets schooling some young whippersnappers

The P-51 was the biggest badass of the era...but I loved the look of the P-38
