I'm the same as Napoleon. I have my ppl but my medical certificate has been expired for a fee years, and I'm getting nothing but confusion on how to get back on track.
I'm commercial, but I think for private all you have to do is go get a third class medical certificate and you're good to go if you already have your PPL.
If you haven't flown in years I'd recommend doing a flight review with a CFI as a refresher.

It's an expensive hobby, even if you are given a plane. I have flown a lot with a friend. None of it is difficult to learn. You are just doing many simple things simultaneously. That's the rub. The devil is in the details, and mistakes can be expensive.
I love being up there in the clouds. I dream of getting my cert and flying 300 miles for a cheeseburger on a Saturday morning. For now, that will have to wait.

Just thought it would be interesting if some folks shared their experiences.
I’ve had my PPL for two years and due for my first bi-annual review. I bought my own plane early in training—mainly so I’d be comfortable with the plane I was flying when I finished, but it also makes economic sense.
My favorite regular Trip is a quick flight over to Gulf Shores. Leave Lakefront at 9:30/10, land in GS and grab a courtesy car, and hit LuLu’s for lunch. Go to the beach for a few hours, then back to NOLA by 7pm. Great day Trip.

I think I know who you’re referring to, did he crash with his dog in the plane with him?
I knew him, he was from Baton Rouge, he had a Air Transport Rating, a lot of hours in the type plane he was flying, everything that should have resulted in a safe flight, but that day he was in a hurry, had a minor electronics issue with the plane, and made a unplanned stop to have it serviced, that combined with his familiarity with the plane caused him to make a simple mistake prior to takeoff that killed him.

I have a V tailed Bonanza (ironic right). Fly between KNEW and KDWH. Have a hanger at each. Love to fly. Have a PP and Instrument and Multi though the Multi is not current

The FAA's attitude toward crashes is that the pilot starts crashing the plane before it even leaves the ground. Sounds like it holds true in this example.

I have my PPL but need to get my BFR done which has been expired for several months now. I love flying but don’t go as much as I used to because the plane is now based in Picayune instead of Slidell and I live in DS. I’m part of a five person partnership that owns a 172N.

About 25 years ago I got maybe one hour of time in one, was a 1963 model, the owner then landed it gear up before never got a chance to get more time and get signed off.

He was flying a Beechcraft Twin Baron, and took off with the fuel selector set to the auxiliary tanks instead of main tanks, shortly after taking off the fuel system ran dry and the engines quit. He survived the initial crash, but I think the fire got him before anyone could help him get out. Apparently being in a hurry and having a lot of time in the plane, he failed to do a pre-take off checklist which would have included making sure the fuel tank selector was in the proper position. I think the auxiliary tanks are not to be used during takeoff and landing because they don't have internal baffles to prevent the fuel pickups from going dry when the plane is not in level flight.

Try an orientation flight. If you don't feel comfortable with it you'll know pretty quick if you want to continue.
