No canopies allowed on beach in Destin...wtf??

Been going to Destin for about 10 years now. Normally about 6-12 people and we always set up our spot under our canopy tent (8'x 8'). Got out this past weekend, unfolded the canopy and chair guy comes running out explaining they have become a huge liability and they are not allowed on the beach. Have others encountered this?

Umbrellas > canopies...
Side note... frick Destin...
You can use them in Pensacola, and Orange beach, but they can't be beyond a certain point.. Marked with signs..

Private beach or public beach?

People never anchor them properly. Wind picks it up and bashes grandma in the face.

Tell him to prove it and pound sand. He’s just trying to sell you an umbrella for the week. I think Walton county just imposed size limits but unsure about Destin.

Canopies are as trashy as the public beach you went to.

Sounds like a way to get you to rent an umbrella.

They can’t make additional money off you when you stop renting their chaise lounges for the week.
That’s the only reason for their policy change.

Never considered that. Good yet shady marketing tool. Ban canopies and lease your umbrellas.

I hate to hear this happened but can kinda understand it. Beaches are usually breezy and newbies dont know how to anchor their new easy ups and I have seen them cartwheeling across the camp ground several times my self. Sadly old experienced beach bums like you gotta suffer from idiots and lawyers

Ever see an umbrella or several blowing around when a thunderstorm comes up? With their pointed poles....I've seen it happen probably 20 times. I still can't believe I haven't seen anyone get impaled.

"Last year we passed a code that prohibited any tents larger than six by six by six," Kellenberger explained. "The reasoning was, the data we had received over the course of last year revealed that the general public didn't like the pop-up style tents. So, we made an effort to prohibit those types of the tents."

I've never even thought about eating peas on the beach.

That pic is from when an F16 flew low and blew everything away.
