And the Suicide Prevention Hotline is a joke. They can
t do anything but talk. Like I need a total stranger that doesn't know me from Adam telling me I'm worth a damn. You're on the verge of suicide, that doesn't help, but the restrictions put in place on what they can and cannot say make it so they can only mutter platitudes.

Hopefully he was a loner who didn't leave behind family or children to deal with the despair. Only a selfish person would do that. Had a good friend do that last year, made me sad for a while, then pissed me off because he left a wife and kids, then his father had a stroke two months later.

Yeah.
That’s what I’d always thought.
Anyone dials that number, they are either attention seekers or desperate.
And what can they do?
Offer some trite and pithy sayings that feel doubly hollow when you are in the pit of despair?

Look, no offense (I don't know you so I'm not presuming to understand your situation), but I get really tired of seeing this shite from people who haven't ever experienced depression or suicidal thoughts. It's not just that easy. Sometimes you talk to people and they don't care or don't take you seriously.

Like all others that express similar opinions: they already know everything they need to judge their entire life with just the word suicide.
They can’t be bothered to even read the facts they are given.

Depressed people can sometimes feel the most lonely and lost when they are surrounded by people because it can exacerbate their feeling of not really fitting in and having a different view of the world than others. Depression can be a dark and foreboding place.

Then you must not have everything you want. You have to take a step back and figure out what makes you happy

Robin Williams. Obviously I didn't know him but talk about someone who seemingly has everything anyone could ever want out of life.

Does it make you feel better that he didn't have a wife or kids?

If I knew him, yeah, it probably would. Otherwise, one less vehicle on the road.

Heavy heavy drug and alcohol abuse for many years. I would use someone like this as an example simply because he wasn't a normal guy who "had everything one could want"...he was a substance abuser which undoubtedly led to his demons

friend of mine killed himself because of this. He was afraid his family was going to have to be forced to take care of him. but he was in perfect shape, was only 45 and nobody knew where this idea in his head came from.

This. And there are those who'll give you a pat on the back but six months later when you haven't snapped out of it they're nowhere to be found. Most people, and that includes immediate family members, aren't there for the long term, especially when the depression is intractable. I speak from experience dealing with someone close to me who's been in a major depressive episode for about two years. I've watched friends and family drift away until almost no one is left. Even therapists lose patience with someone who's not getting better. They're not supposed to, but they do.
I'm not saying don't reach out, but if you're not willing to be there for the long haul, you're not doing the person any favors.
Thanks, you said it better than I did (as evidenced by the deluge of downvotes I received).

No. My point was only that people who don't suffer from these problems often just say "just talk to someone!" like it's really that easy and if you did that you'd be saved! Just because I tell someone I'm depressed doesn't mean they're going to help me get out of it. Most people are too caught up in their own lives to spend a significant amount of time helping someone.

You are expecting someone with mental health issues to think through things and make rational decisions the same as yourself, it doesn't work like that, their brain was malfunctioning.
