Trying to plan my spring Caribbean getaway. Anguilla is my favorite but I’m going to give it a year to rebuild after Irma. I’ve been to following (listed below), so trying to find somewhere new, if possible. I care about good beaches, good food, and limited crowds. Not a baller, but I’m cool with about $1,000 a day for two people for lodging and normal meals. Obviously looking for another place that wasn’t obliterated by the hurricanes.

Anguilla
St Thomas
St Martin
Grand Cayman
St. John
Virgin Gorda
Tortola
Harbour Island
Eleuthera
Providenciales
Cozumel
Isla Mujeres

Should I repeat one of these or try something new? Anyone been to Grand Exuma? Been eyeing that one a bit.

1,2,3,5,6 and 7 from your list were devastated by the hurricanes. I’d be looking at the others you listed.

Isla Mujeres is an Island I visit at least once a year. It’s that good and it’s an incredibly good value. Providenciales is exactly what you want but it’s $$$ and don’t stay at or next to Beaches Resort which is teeming with families. Cancun would be the lowest on the list for me unless you want to spend nearly all of the trip on the hotel strip or at an all-inclusive. Harbor Island and Eleuthera are high on my list. I know they’re expensive but they look fantastic. Other than St. Vincent and the Grenadines they are the next islands I want to stay on and explore. I’d also like to spend more time on Anguilla but now isn’t the time.

St. Kitts and Nevis are fantastic. The only drawback is that St. Kitts doesn’t have the best beaches. Other than that it’s fantastic and nearby Nevis has some very good beaches plus it was the Caribbean getaway for the royal family for decades.

Don't have time to write much, but I've been to most of those islands on your list and Exuma has everything you're looking for and more. It's an incredible island - Coco Plum Beach at low tide is the best I've ever been to and you won't see hardly a soul at the beaches. It's crazy. Very uncommercialized and great people. Very safe. We rented a house in February Point and it surpassed expectations.

Any reason why you would avoid places damaged by Hurricanes?

Every island is different. Some are back up and running, some have some areas hospitable, some still devastated, but "open for business" Think of it as doing good. Plus can probably get some great rates on properties via villa rental or VRBO as many are laying fallow.

Roatan, off Honduras. Especially if you like diving.

ETA: VABuckeye beat me to it. I would definitely look into it if I were you.

Check out Palm Island resort in the Grenadines and thanks me later. Just got back and it was great. It is very comparable to the BVIs. All meals and alcohol is included. Excursions are priced very reasonably (100 per person per excursion which includes food and alcohol). We did a trip to Mayreau and the Tobago Cays. Also did a trip to Mopion Island and Chatham Bay on Union Island.

A tip is to book it through an express deal on Priceline where you select 4 Star all inclusive. Total with tax and all service charges/gratuity was $3200 for a week in December. On top you have to book a flight to Barbados and the resort will coordinate the flight to Union Island which costs $200 per person round trip as the resort funds part of that.

Just got back from Ambergris Caye. Loved it. If you dive, check it out. Sounds like you could use some more western Carib islands.

Update: booked a house on Hoopers Bay on Exuma. Looks to be a good location. The Bay is sheltered a bit and it’s close to boat rentals and some restaurants.

Will certainly be a bit more of a “do it yourself” type trip. But having the extra space and privacy will be nice.

I’ll take any other Exuma spec recos
