Maria has been hitting us hard in San Juan for over 13 hours. Power went out at about 9pm EST. Its slowing down now but the gusts are still hurricane force. Luckily, my windows held(140mph rated) and the generator is still on the roof. Outside it looks like a bomb went off. Its going to be a long road to recovery.

The P.R. electric company defaulted on bond debt this summer. They are effectively bankrupt & billions in debt. Their grid is ancient.

It is a government owned and a politically corrupt boondoggle. They are going to be bailed out by the U.S. Maria is going to be the best thing possible for their Power Authority.

Airport looked pretty bad. However, will probably be the first thing cleaned up ASAP.

This sounds like an alternate beginning to the Lord of the Flies, only with puertoriqueños who have no power, water, or food.

This was just the area around where Harvey made land fall here in the middle coast of Texas now expand those those numbers for population numbers of PR plus the fact they or on a island a long ways from the mainland, and the fact they are broke.

Sounds like we need to organize a relief Tigerdropping for PR.

Entire Island of PR is currently in the dark.

Estimates 4 to 6 months recovery of power grid

If this is true, this will be a very interesting exercise in large scale disaster recovery, with many lessons learned.

It's hard to comprehend the scale.

PR could fall into anarchy. I would think looting could get out of control. I fear for those caught in the aftermath of this disaster. The US coast Guard and Military will be called upon and strained to the limit in the months to come just to restore order. This is something the likes of have never been seen there in terms of the depth and extent of damage and potential chaos.

You've got to figure the government will essentially set up critical resource supply lines until this is sorted. Huge effort.

I am not 100% sure if PR uses a three phase power distribution system

I am not sure of this either but can confirm that El Conquistador, a hotel on the NNE coast, has 3 phase power during good times.

Still a lot of uncertainty associated with the future track but Florida and the Gulf are in the clear. However, the signal is slowly growing for a new system to form in the WCAB and move north into the Gulf. It is still probably 7 days out until this system would start to form but it wouldn't be surprising for this to be another major given the season so far.
