Winter is here for cable and satellite TV operators.

American consumers are cancelling traditional pay-TV service at a much faster rate than previously expected, according to research firm eMarketer.

In 2017, 22.2 million U.S. adults will cut the cord on cable, satellite or telco TV service — up 33% over 2016 — the researcher now predicts. That’s significantly higher than eMarketer’s prior estimate of 15.4 million cord-cutters for this year. Meanwhile, the number of “cord-nevers” (consumers who have never subscribed to pay TV) will rise 5.8% this year, to 34.4 million.

By 2021, the number of cord-cutters will nearly equal the number of people who have never had pay TV — a total of 81 million U.S. adults. That means around 30% of American adults won’t have traditional pay TV at that point, per eMarketer’s revised forecast.

I have not figured out the cord cutting yet. I pay around $90 for my cable package. I have not seen a combination of apps that gives me all I watch for that price or cheaper especially when you consider price, quality and ease of use. I am not switching to antennae to app etc...

I delayed it for a while, I kept reading the thread on the tech board over and over. I finally did it and don't regret a single thing.

Fire TV with PSVue, Netflix, and HBO added through Amazon. HD antenna for football and local news.

Part of what happens when most people cut the cord is they start watching fewer things in general. After a while you realize how much shite you watched just because, how much time was wasted on things you wouldn't go out of your way to watch if it wasn't just there on a path of least resistance.

I cut the cord 4 years ago now.

Zero regrets.

Same.

In the end, when I pay for top of the line internet service, HBO GO, Showtime App, Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV (for each room), etc. the difference is negligible and the ease of use is way down.

My book reading has definitely gone up and I sit outside more.

Feel mentally healthier these days.

I believe I'm in year 6. Also no regrets. Anything I want to watch, I can find a way to watch it.

I'm canceling too. Cox decided without my knowledge to give me the premium channels for 10 dollars extra a month. frick them.

That's my thing. It's not worth it for me to use my cousin's content provider password and jump through hoops for some shitty streams when I can just pay a few bucks more and get all the sports I want without any issues.

My wife and I are in that number... saves over $100/month and I don't really miss it.

Cut the chord a few months ago and don't regret it at all. The only real downside is the delay in live events because its streaming. SlingTV is awesome.

I want to stick it to them as much an the next guy, but when they charge you more for your internet connection and throttle the shite out of you when you go over their limit, in addition to all of the hoops you have to jump through to watch certain things....it isn't worth it for me. And AT&T has not pissed me off as much as Cox did in the past so far for TV service that I was motivated enough to do something about it.

I agree. They will figure out a way to screw the cord-cutters. We will have to cross that bridge when we get there.

The cable companies are recouping some lost revenue through internet service. My internet with Cox has gone from around $50 3-4 years ago to $87 currently

That is great insight, I honestly never thought about.
