re: Why does the government have the ability to restrict what substances are in my body?

I agree with you. But you axed a querstion. I could go into 30 pages to answer it but I'll just make one point that most people are not aware of. It has many names. I used 'Symbolic Action'. Others use 'Law as Teacher.'
Short story... If you make something legal you imply that it is good (or at least OK).
Examples:
If we legalize prostitution we are saying that it is a good career choice for our daughters. So, we keep it illegal but law enforcement turns a blind eye to it much of the time.
Booze was prohibited primarily by women. They didn't want their children seeing dad get sloshed and taking up the habit. By legalizing booze it sent the message to lil Johnny that booze was OK.
In the 60s drug use became insane. I lost a friend who snorted arid extra dry and it froze his lungs. So, all the PSA's came out teaching children 'Drugs are bad, Nkay?' If drugs are legalized then it has the opposite message. "Drugs are Okay."
As a libertarian I have long been frustrated with this idea that 'legalization = approval.' I don't like obese people. But I don't think they should be put in prison for it. It's a choice if you want to destroy your body.

What gives them the right to dictate what substances I consume as an adult?
I get your point and I actually agree with it. The problem is that you assume responsibility for your actions. Society has been coddled and programmed that we are not responsible for our actions or choices that if I choose to do drugs and become an addict, and completely become a nonproductive member of society, then society has to take care of me and nanny me because I made stupid choices. That's where my bad decisions are then shared by society to fix because I'm a dumbass and can't contribute.

Government restricts all sorts of stuff, from nuclear weapons to certain chemicals that they believe the general populace shouldn't have access to because it causes more harm than good.

The bright line is 'harm to others.' IE, me having a nuclear weapon is bad because I could do harm to lesbians.
If something only does harm to me (like not wearing a seat belt) then it should not be illegal. Once you start banning behaviors that only hurt the owner of self then there is no limit. IE, it could be illegal to be overweight because you can get heart disease. Cigarettes would have been banned a long time ago by that standard.

that dude deserves a darwin award, if nothing else we need to legalize drugs just so morons like your friend will off themselves like he did instead of being a moron who actually made it into adulthood.
Thanks for giving more grounds for legalization
PS: Or you know, we could stop being idiots who don't teach our children that sniffing fricking arid extra dry (or things like it) isn't great for the human body

Prohibition never works as intended

No one can say they support small govt and free markets, yet support prohibition without being a hypocrite

Lawyers make the laws, they also make a lot of money defending crimes involving illegal drugs, probably more than any other type of crime.
Follow the money.

1. Bible tells them so. Or the koran.
Appeal to authority.
2. For our protection from people who might steal to feed adiction.
3. To keep worker bees making ford f-N50's

You're welcome. Another reason I've always supported legalization is the black market (see alcohol prohibition). However, if you choose to abuse legalized drugs it is not my responsibility to pay for your rehab. Die in the gutter to set an example for the youths.

Because it can be very likely that tax payer dollars will wind up footing the hospital bill. Same reasoning behind being ticketed for not wearing a seat belt.
I agree with the OP, nevermind the gov't owning line though, but if we can pollute our bodies with alcohol and cigarettes, then it should all be legal, and as long as it has no adverse effect on other humans, you should do whatever you want with your body.
But the penalties for adversely affecting someone else while under the influence of anything should be MUCH harsher IMO.
I also understand my thoughts may not be very feasible, but it still shows the contradiction with regards to cigarettes/alcohol.

quote:I wonder if the amount of new users if everything was legalized is overstated. Just a thought.
I think the idea is that a drugged culture is a weaker culture and less able to defend itself.
I also wonder if the cons of the amount of new users it would bring outweighs the pros of being able to regulate and tax it.

OK, so if you are fat you will have health issues that effect the 'tax payer dollars' in health care. Therefore you should get a ticket for being fat? Is that your logic?

Because that's what the people want.

Because you are a burden on the government if you use it irresponsibly.

Because you are a burden on the government if you use it irresponsibly.
All are burdens on the gov't if used irresponsibly. All are legal.

With government health care, they do in fact own all our bodies. They pay for your healthcare so they do in fact have a right to tell you what you can consume. As our rights erode further, I hope people start realizing what's happening.
The govt doesnt pay for everyones healthcare and the substance laws were already there. The first one is liberal and telling people that drugs are bad is conservative.

The government. That machine is far more than elected officials. Doesn't matter how many you change out. The machine will remain.
