re: OT Parents: Do you think there's too much homework assigned in the public school system?

I'm surprised how little homework my kid has in his St. Tammany high school, and he has 4 honors/AP classes. Finally had one his junior year that loaded them up with homework, though it was mostly just busy work, nothing requiring too much thought. I was at least glad he had to put some hours in during the week to prep him a bit more for college.
On a related note, my wife works in the school system, mostly elementary/middle school kids. She told me this week that they are no longer allowed to have spelling tests - nothing that gives a kid a grade strictly on spelling. The principal even flipped out when she found out a teacher gave kids a spelling worksheet and gave them a grade on it. What in the everloving frick?

How much is "too much"?

Homework is the most useless, pointless thing. School lasts 8 hours. That leaves roughly 8 to 10 for LIFE.

not enough. i had homework EVERY day.

I'm going to send my kids to school with laundry to fold.

Exactly, like I said early, the vast majority is essentially copying out of a book.
I remember a calc teacher I had in HS, the first day of class he says, "I will not be assigning any grades for homework" most of the class grumbled because how were they going to inflate their grade without homework, now it was just testing

Definitely trending down in Grapevine/Colleyville ISD. Also, rarely did my daughter have homework in Coppell ISD. And, what are these "books" you speak of in this thread? Kids here don't even have lockers anymore because of the lack of real books.

My nephew goes to a school that is a "homework free zone" school. They give a reason why.. Something about overloading kids and studies have shown that homework doesn't necessarily help.

What's the name of the school?

It's been that way for over a decade and a half because I also had homework in first grade.
I graduated High School over a decade and a half ago.

Bro don't you know that all offspring of the OT will be in gifted classes and be the best player on whatever athletic team they are on?

A kid needs to have downtime to be a kid at some point during the day.
I know a woman who came here from Vietnam with her parents in the 70's. Said parents worked endless minimum-wage jobs and made damn sure she had endless homework too. If school didn't send her home enough her parents made sure she got more. She hated growing up but is now making about a half-million a year as a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins.
I also grew up with a guy who didn't do much homework from school and was the popular kid on the block. He constantly bitches about how immigrants are taking his work. He isn't making anywhere close to six figures either.
My kids are doing homework.

As an experienced public school teacher, I can tell you one thing that you can absolutely book. Parents are going to bitch either way.
Too much homework = you're taking away too much of my kid's free time.
Too little homework = you must not be teaching in a way that fully challenges my kid (along with some others I've heard).

No need for homework as a grade. If the kid completes the homework or study material, they will be fine in testing which will allow them to pass.
Homework has increased due to teachers not being able to be time effective with the loads of additional bs each class has before they can get to the material.
The amount of accommodations, the way in which a public school teacher is basically forced to teach, and other interruptions in the class.
It's sad but this is what public school in Louisiana is, I can't speak for other states.

Homework is uneccessary and a sign of for teaching

You need to teach them how to be business people.
Teach them the ways of being friends with everyone.
I never liked homework. So I got up early and went to school. Copied everyone else's homework before school started.

Not a parent but I've seen teachers unnecessarily load kids up with homework at times. Unfortunately it has as much to do with pressure to get kids on grade level if they're not as it does being a poor instructor/teacher.

I think they should do projects in class too, teach them how to do it right. You never know if their parents are too dumb to help.
