I've come to the conclusion that not much teaching is going on during the week in St. Tammany Parish. All they do is bombard these kids with hours of homework where the parents are actually the ones teaching the kids every night. What the hell are they doing at school during the day? Makes no damn sense for a kid to spend 7 hours a day at school and then have 4 hours of homework to do when they get home. A kid needs to have downtime to be a kid at some point during the day.

Do you share these thoughts at your PTA meeting?

absolutely and most homework is essentially copying out of a book.

I definitely felt overwhelmed when I was in school. Between classes, sports, having sex with my teacher, and church activities, I was swamped daily.

My daughter in 1st grade comes home with homework. Granted it only takes about 15 minutes, but I don't remember ever having homework before 7th grade when I was in school.

Honestly sometimes I think theres too much homework because most kids have too much other stuff going on..., sports practice, clubs, after school activities... when they're at practice for 2-3 hours, plus have 4 hours of homework ahead of them, its hard to keep up.

They would never do it HS, but I once had a dynamics class in college where the class was actually tought mostly by the students.

The first 20-25 minutes was students getting in front of the class (picked by random order by the teacher) to show the class how they did the previous nights homework.

Embarrassment (or fear thereof) is often the best motivator (socratic method). If the student didnt do the homework the night before the teacher would stop the class until he either figured it out or asked for help from the fellow students.

It's been that way for over a decade and a half because I also had homework in first grade.

I have no idea what school is like now but from 1996 to 2008, I don't feel like I had an excessive amount of homework. I did take an AP English Lit course in 12th grade which required more work than all other courses that year combined but that was by choice.

Three in St. Tammany schools. Homework was wrapped up at 930 for the last one...and that's early as band practice was cancelled due to weather.
All in honors classes, so maybe that adds to the load, but TONS of homework!

I don't believe you. You played sports AND you were active with your church?

It hasn't been much of a problem for my kid until now. My daughter is taking Latin II, and the jackass teaching the class says to EXPECT 2-3 hours of homework every night. Hell, it's not even an AP or Honors class. It's fricking Latin!

What a fricking jackass! My kid is brilliant (tied for tops in her class), but that is fricking over the top. When is she supposed to do her other homework? She is also on a sports team, so there's another three hours she won't get back. If her other three teachers had his attitude, she'd have 8 hours of homework a night. Thankfully, they do not, but every now and then she's gonna have 5-6 hours of homework on a single night. That is insane.

dont know about homework, but they sure as hell cancel a lot of class days.

maybe the homework is to make up for all the time they miss.
