absolutely too much homework, especially in elementary. What pisses me off is all the projects my kids get in elementary. It's just busy work, and my wife and I have to do half if not most. I've got multiple degrees; i don't want to be working on projects every other week.

They need to work on those projects at school if they're so important. Some of these projects take several hours just to learn about stuff they can learn in a couple minutes without the projects.

My kids are not in public school. They get enough in private school and are learning a lot.

The general gist of this thread:

2-3 hours of sports practice for my little future NFL player is super important.

My future pro athlete child cannot be bothered to practice learning.

I started first grade a decade and a half ago. Not sure why either of these facts are relevant.

So your kid can't do it?

Sad thing is studies have pretty much proven homework is detrimental, not productive.

Well yeah, every parent believes that their child has a future outside of school.
Between dance, sports, gym, and "family" time parents say they don't have time for home work.

I'm graduated now but I had homework every day in elementary school, very little in middle school and in high school I didn't have homework once in all 4 years

Yep. Parents work however many hours a day then have to come home fix supper and tend to the house and they have to spend sometimes hours working through homework with the kids. It's like it's parents homework too because the young kids can't do it themselves.

It's bad when I can barely help my 5th grader in math because the way i learned isn't the right way anymore.

Don't worry, it's cyclical. Follow the money.

Don't worry...just let them slack off...what's the worst that can happen?

I went to private school. I usually spent around 3 hours on homework/studying a night. Would have to spend much more than that the night before a test though. After a 3 hour practice, it sometimes seemed like a lot. It was the top ranked college prep school in BR thou, so it really isn't comparable to public school.

Yes. Not a parent but I was in public school not that long ago. In middle and high school, kids should be studying for tests more than doing (busy)homework.

Yes,
Three grand-daughters in 5th, 7th and 8th grade. Most homework, and lots of it, is done on computer but the "research" that is done could be done in class more times than not. We've provide tax funds for Smart Boards and Smart TV's but they still have to come home and spend hours looking things up to complete practice tests. All they seem to do is practice taking tests and I'm sure it's all about the LEAP scores for the state school rankings. What happened to learning first??? Don't even get me started on how math is done these days! I have a Finance Degree and I have to throw out the way I learned math. Crazy!

Exactly. In an effort to hold schools and teachers accountable, they are greatly diminishing the educational experience. I have nothing against accountability, but the testing and practice testing is way out of hand.

My csb is we have days at work that the kids can use as "Educational Opportunities" outside of the classroom. They fill out a form a week ahead of time and I approve/deny the request. They have to follow up with a one page essay summarizing their experience.

I had 7 kids that went to a robotics competition for a non-school team. Those little bastards collaborated on Google Docs to do the essay. I couldn't even be mad at it.
