First of all, watched it for the first time last night. Really really great movie and possibly my favorite Nolan movie. Not sure how I missed this.

Anyway, I understand Nolan leaves this is up to speculation like a lot of his movies, but here's my question.

Was Bordens double a clone or a twin? I've got some other follow up question when I get an answer

It was his twin. Borden sent Angier to Tesla to make him think he actually cloned himself, I believe.

So was the twin the one that wasn't hung to death? Whose daughter was it?

The twin that survived wasn't as obsessed with magic. He was the father of the girl.

Bordon and Fallon are the same. They switch spots throughout the whole movie.

I don't remember the movie telling us which one was the father of the girl.

So if the twin was the rightful father, why was Borden so upset about her when he was taken off by the guards to be hung?

Fallon seemed really sincere and interested in that last scene IMO. It almost seemed to me like it was Borden who survived so he could be with his daughter. But then again, one of them was really upset in the prison

They're not the same, though. Borden was obsessed with Angier and his trick, which is why he was caught beneath the stage and found guilty of his murder.

I mean, I get that they both played each part, but for explanation purposes, there is Borden that you meet in the beginning, and his twin that you later meet.

The movie didn't tell us much explicitly. But you know that one twin loved his wife and the other didn't while both loved the daughter, one as a father the other as an uncle.

which is precisely why I think maybe that was him who was talking to Angier at the end. Maybe his twin took the heat for the murder so that Borden could be with his daughter

At the end, yes. One was jailed and the other wasn't so they played their parts for a while. But throughout the movie, they changed position and part of the entertainment is rewatching and trying to decipher who is who and when.

Not really. Even in the beginning both twins are there.

Also, before Angier was even given the Tesla hint, he captured the twin in the coffin to blackmail Borden. How did he not figure that shite right then and there by looking at the guy.

I'm pretty sure he just made up all the Tesla stuff to send Angier on a wild goose chase. Christian Bale's character had no idea that Tesla would figure out how to clone a person

This is true, I believe.

It's his best IMO, and one of my top five of all time. I absolutely love this movie; it's great.

Good Borden Twin - wouldn't tie dry knot, didn't know what knot was tied, went to angiers wife's funeral, didn't go crazy about figuring out the angiers transported man trick,

Bad Borden Twin - tied dry knot, was obsessed with angier, cheated on mutual wife, performed bullet catch, went under stage

The Tesla note was a wild goose chase. Bad Borden never met Tesla, but saw angier at the Tesla show and baited him. Bad Borden never anticipated that Tesla could actually build a cloning machine, otherwise Bad/Good Borden would know exactly how angier was performing the teleported man.

Angier #1 - really didn't know exactly what would happen when the cloning machine worked. Killed "him-self". Knew he would drown and die on the first attempt but was OK with it, as he believed that per cutter "it was like going home". Knew at some point he would bait Borden into the trap.

Angier clone #2 thru #50 - didn't really know what to expect since the clone retained all memory up until the "zap" and the next clone appeared on the balcony without falling into the tank. So in the final clones mind, he's stepped into the machine 50 times and never drowned.

I never get tired of watching it because the way it ends, so much is still a guess. And much of it can't even be worked out completely until you see it again.
