2 brothers shared one life. It's but obsession and the lengths to which a man will go to for their obsession.

It's moving up as one of my all-time favorites. Every time I watch it, I can think up a new theory on it.

So you think Tesla's machine worked?

Now, you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because, of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

I don't remember the movie telling us which one was the father of the girl.

Completely forget the names of the characters, but when Bale is talking to Jackman after he is shot, when he talks about his brother he talks about how he never loved his wife, and I think some other clues to indicate the girls father is the surviving one.

Also, what was the deal at the end with the old guy? He was in on it the whole time? I was hardly awake at that point

So if the twin was the rightful father, why was Borden so upset about her when he was taken off by the guards to be hung?

To keep up appearances for Angier to make him think he had finally won. Not sure they knew he was the man interested in the tricks, but he had the opportunity to to talk to Fallon about it before he was hung.

I mean, kind of. I can't fathom being that obsessed with having the greatest trick known to man that you'd be willing to be the one who ended up in the tank. Like Fallon told him, he did some terrible things.

IMO Tesla's machine clearly worked and it's pretty inarguable. I mean, we see the (assumedly) multiple cats, plus the hats, plus Angier be cloned. Now, there are arguments that the cat(s)/hats were planted to fool the audience, and that the Angier/clone scene was a lie (unreliable narrator type of thing), but I think that's a bit unfair and would be pretty shitty if that were the case. I think if you take the movie at what it presents, you have to believe that the machine worked and actually cloned things. The hats prove that for me, and even if you don't believe the story told by Angier that the clone machine worked and cloned him, at the end with the shot of all the Angier bodies should spell it out for you, no?

Well he was also surprised that Angier was also Lord Caldlow (slowly googling all of these names), and when he realized what he had done to get the tricks and get custody of Fallon's daughter, he had no problem helping Fallon out to make things right.

okay so he wasn't really in on it the whole time, but he knew at that point that the obsession had turned Angier and killing him was the only way to end the madness

I wouldn't go as far to say that he suggested killing Angier, but I'm sure he passed along info to Fallon to help him get his daughter back, which I suppose would only be possible by killing him.

Perfect crime, honestly, since no one knew they were twins so after the other one was executed, he wouldn't be a suspect.

which is why he was caught beneath the stage and found guilty of his murder.

this was the sketchy part, I mean why did he get the blame? I guess to complete the story

The tank was only there to get rid of the clone, wasn't part of the trick. Since Borden was found at the scene, they assumed he had placed the tank there to trap and kill Angier.

and Cutter walked in while he was frantically trying to break him (the clone) out of the tank

Not sure if this has been addressed:

No one thought that Tesla was cloning people. The ruse was to make Wolverine think that Tesla could teleport someone.

The cloning was a surprise to everyone, including Tesla. Wolverine "telelporting" as a clone was him turning lemons into lemonade.

The part that confused me a little was who was the clone and who was the original. The scene where Angier was first testing it in his theater, he puts the gun nearby, starts the machine, and waits for his clone to show up......then shoots him. He installed a trap door for the "original" to fall down and be drowned. So it stands to reason that if you were stepping on the platform, you knew you were drowning. Well, the scene at the end with Fallon, Angier talks about the courage it took to the do the trip, not knowing whether you'd end up in the tank or off in the background. Guess that's a long and winded debate about the consciousness of clone, but I assumed that every night you did the trick, you were going to die an agonizing death.

Borden A and Borden B shared the same life preapprenticeship. It's how one of them saw through the old man's fishbowl trick.

Borden A (magic obsessed/showmanship) and Borden B (magic obsessed/ family)

Borden A

Kills Angiers wife
Pushes the bullet trick
Fights with B's wife
Gets with Angiers asst
Is Borden at dinner and majority of scenes
Plants the fake diary
Refused to give up showmanship feud
Is executed

Borden B

Is more by the book
Comforts the nephew
Gets married has a kid
Fallon the majority of scenes
Comforts his child when A fights wife
Less showy off stage
Gets revenge for his brother.

The film usually tells you we hope A through arrogant coldness or B through a warm comfort.

"Tell by your eyes if you love me or magic more today"

Rebuffing the wife on losing costume.

Going to his daughter.

But A died and B lived.

I don't think we can say for certain whether or not he or his "clone" was being teleported, which is what he said as he was dying.
