And they crushed the eventual Super Bowl champs 35-7 during the regular season.

I'm sure Pittsburgh thanked their lucky stars they got to play Houston in the AFC champ game and not the Chargers on the road.

I was incredibly pleased when the Saints hired him. As a teenage kid having followed the NFL for only 5 or 6 years, all I knew was that he was a SB winning coach. The concept of figurehead coaches hadn't dawned on me back then.

Switzer

Great college coach like Saban but not much when it comes to the top level of coaching...could he build a team from bottom-up like Vermeil coming from college? Like Carroll did coming from USC?

Who knows? But Cowboys didn't last much longer under him.

Switzer was gifted the keys to a Ferrari - a veteran, dominant champion...a dynasty at the pinnacle of their powers.

He won a Super Bowl but the Cowboys quickly dismantled.

But he is part of the exclusive club of only 3 coaches in history.

To win a National Championship in college and a Super Bowl.

Jimmy Johnson
Barry Switzer
Pete Carroll

Dick Vermeil, very short shelf-life and massive burnout, so lucky Martz was the OC to construct that legendarily prolific offense AND that Warner wasn't a bum at the QB position

Those offenses in KC were among the best in the NFL, and his players loved him. Nobody ever regarded him as the best coach in the league, but he certainly wasn't the worst or the most overrated for that matter.

I don't think Payton is a bad answer. He is a great offensive mind but he is regarded as a top 5 coach and the dude has not done dick lately.

I don't think he's a bad coach at all, but I do think he's overrated.

John Fox is overrated too.

LOL his DC Buddy Ryan makes a good case too considering he accomplished squat as Philly HC and even less with Arizona, the 46 defense's weaknesses could easily get exposed against capable QBs like Marino and Montana as was proven.

The title says coach, not head coach. No way in hell is Buddy Ryan an overrated coach.

Jon Gruden perhaps? (Even though his turnaround job with Oakland "Siberia" Raiders was nothing short of remarkable)

People talk about the 1981 Chargers as some legendary team but they were 10-6 with a putrid defense and got destroyed by the Bengals TWICE that year(48-17 in regular season at San Diego). Of course they're still expressing excuses for the title game loss and blaming the weather, all that bullshiit sour grape losers do.

1981 was memorable because that was supposed to be their year. The 70s superpowers were in decline and they were expected to be the class of an aged and weakened AFC. And then the Bengals came out of nowhere and passed the Browns and Steelers to become a force.

1980 was the real tragedy. They lost the AFCCG at home to an average Raiders team that they should have destroyed. They even got a reprieve from playing the Browns after the Raiders upset them. All the stars were aligned in their favor for 2 years and they blew it.

1979 was literally absurd for how it culminated for the Bolts: the 1979 Chargers were probably the best team in the NFL that season(top 5 offense AND defense, tough SOS) and obliterated the defending champion Steelers at home 35-7 yet lost to the Pastorini/Campbell-less Oilers(vastly inferior) when they were 22 point favorites at home. How many teams EVER are established as 22 point favorites in the playoffs? probably not many historically, probably the best of the Air Coryell teams.

Gotta disagree with that statement, Seifert was the architect of that stellar Frisco defense that routinely ranked in the top 5 in the NFL throughout the 1980s and shut down one of the all-time great offenses(1984 Dolphins) in the Super Bowl
