First time gel coat restore. Need help

I've got a bay boat that is in serious need of some gel coat restoration. The hull is red but the fading and scratches have gotten pretty bad. At first I thought just using the compound and wax would be good enough but I have been told it is time to wet sand the gel coat down and re apply gel coat. Has anyone ever done this? I'm looking to do it myself but honestly have no idea where to start.
btw... how much would it cost to get this done to a 22 foot Triton if I wasn't able to do it myself?

I think it's probably worth wet sanding and waxing. Getting the gelcoat reapplied will not be cheap at all

Wet sanding is the way to go, I did mine two years ago, took me two weekends but I pulled all my cleats, rail, gauges, throttle, switches, etc. off so I could sand all around.
process is pretty simple, get some 3000 grit sand paper, turn a water hose on low so you have a steady stream wet area rub with sand paper until desired effect while wetting with hose. Mine came out new looking, I compound polished and waxed after, made a huge difference in keeping boat clean as wax held up alot longer.

If you can wait until this winter you'll be able to find someone to detail that whole boat for $200 I bet. This time of year anyone worth anything is usually pretty busy.
There are different grits of compounds, wet sanding is just the next step from the grittiest compound and if you have a lot to remove will be faster. But it's often worth it to see if compound will work because you'll cause the least amount of damage using it if not done properly.

Red, orange and yellow gel coats are the most expensive. A gallon of red would cost well over 100.00 on line. I only sell 5 gallon pails of red.

I can't help you with where to start, but I can tell you I just got a quote from a local glass guy on regelcoating my 23 Bay Bolt from the rub rail in (essentially the entire topside and floor) He told me it would be $10000.00 to do that. I almost fainted when he said that. I think I'm going to haul my boat to Sarasota and get the interior line-x'ed this winter.

That is high for the SELA market. Florida, might be in line.

You won't be taking that much gel coat off by wet sanding it and the gel coat that is on there should be 2-3mm thick.
I can't imagine with sanding it correctly that you could go thru that layer.
