re: Tour de France. Stage 21. Final Day. Cheers to Froome.

Up until Froome's late burst on the summit yesterday, I thought there might be some surprises in the TT. Froome hasn't looked bad, but he certainly hasn't appeared indestructible. And Bardel and Uran were looking like they might still be a little spry. Smoking the GC contenders in a time trial on day one with fresh legs is one thing, but I thought there was potential for an upset in a time trial with a climb thrown in after 3 weeks of riding. But after yesterday I felt a little silly for thinking someone had a chance.
Very enjoyable tour - I watched a lot more closely this year than I have the past few years. And I can't ever remember looking forward to the next year so much (aside from the Lance days).
ETA: When you guys look back on the Lance days, are those titles "vacant" in your eyes, or do you say to yourself, "Meh...everyone else doped too, so he was still one of the greatest ever (though still an a-hole)"?

I'm not a "meh" guy on the doping subject but there are winners of the tour that admitted doping and still are recognized. It's disingenuous to recognize those tours and then wipe clean seven years of tour history. Those races happened! I still remember Vinokourov attacking Armstrong and Beloki in the stage to Gap in the 2003 tour. Beloki busting his arse and Armstrong racing through the grass and chasing like hell to protect his lead. That was some good racing...

There was a women cyclocross racer busted this earlier this year I think.

Love them or hate them Sky and Froome were easily the best on The Tour this year.
And the Sky team in particular.
A hypothetical for the knowledgeable cycling fans: Would Froome have won if on the Astana team? Could Dan Martin or Uran, for example, have won if they were with Sky?
Not dissing Froome here. Only wondering, say on a scale of 1-10, how important is the team to the GC winner?

I thought that Lance's great advantage wasn't so much doping (and he did) but that he would transfuse and clean his blood in the evening after a stage?

This stadium venue was a great idea

10 Froome wouldn't had won as he'd expended more energy to launch his attacks

Holy shite Bardet. Barely hung on

8.5 is my guess. Without a team to protect you and pace you, there is not a real chance to win the Tour. Sky having 4 men leading out for Froome on any given day saves him 30% of his energy during a 100+ mile ride.

Jan Ullrich doped with the best of em

If a rider is as strong as Froome though, can't they just piggyback his team by hanging on Froome's wheel? In this year's race, Froome's advantage was solely in the time trials.

Really nice ride by Uran today. Also Contador was good as well. Congrats to Froome but people have to attack him (as mentioned above) and take real time to have a shot because of his TT. Bardet must improve his TT or he's at his ceiling in GT. He was bad today and maybe the tour effort finally got to him. Until next year...

Lance Armstrong used to amaze me in the TTs. I couldn't figure out how he was getting the best of the world time trial champ. Now I feel the same way about Froome. It was a great race, but I smell a rat. I guess that is what being one of the dirtiest sports on the planet will do concerning credibility. It was entertaining though.

I don't understand why more teams don't use the oval sprocket?
Posted on 7/22/17 at 4:08 pm to sms151t
Yea. It's all the oval chainring.

Did I say you say it was?
But seriously, they're a gimmick. There's no science behind them.

A gimmick that's won 3 of last 4 and you know these clowns copy each other

Froome is a true freak. He and his team literally played with everyone this year. They were in complete control. Never in doubt. As one commentator noted, Froome is a human lung.

Anyone else want/expect to see some racing in the final stage?
Aside from a tour stage win available there is only one second between Bardet and Landa for a podium finish.
I hope that Bardet and Landa race for third tomorrow.
