For the first time, I recommended that a friend not come visit NOLA

I've always been a big champion of getting friends and people to come visit, to come be a tourist, to come enjoy New Orleans.
I love this city. I think it can be one of the most fun, and the best cities to come visit. I love living here. I've always said while you need to stay vigilant, in the mostly tourist areas you will generally be fine and not to worry about it.
A friend of mine that has been a few times was thinking of coming to visit with her boyfriend that hasn't been.
I told her not to do it, and it is the first time I've ever told someone that. While, more than likely, she will be fine and have no problems, the crime situation has just unraveled. Mitch Landrieu has pursued his own national political ambition to the detriment of his city. The city burns, the police force is a small percentage of what it needs to be, and the promise that was post-K New Orleans is just gone.
It is truly depressing, but this city really is circling the drain. I hate to be on the side of all the OT-tards that I have railed against in the past, but it is what it is.
I want to put faith in the next Mayoral election, but I doubt that will do much.

I did the exact same thing just a couple of days ago. This is not an OT troll or joke...I seriously did. She asked me about a group of girls bringing their daughters down to NOLA for some of the ghost tours. I told her not to come right now.

you're doing God's work.

Smart. In today's climate you could be charged with negligent homicide if you recommend that someone goes to NO.

<---Passed on a trip down there for the 4th of July.

Dude, been saying this since the 70s.
The fascination you people have with that place amazes me. It's a hot Detroit.

It's a cycle. This shite happened in NYC too. They let things devolve until people stopped coming and then they elected a R Mayor and empowered the NYPD. Things changed and it is now safe and clean. We will get safe back. Clean, I think that might be a bridge too far.

The funny thing is she is probably going to go to Chicago instead (she is from that general area).
But Chicago the crime is really really confined. Here it has really bled over.

What was the result of the Feds coming in to fix the NOPD?

99.99% of visitors do not encounter any crime during their stay.

As crazy as this sounds, the only "hope" I see is if Sidney Torres runs. He will be working around the clock, coked up, to get this city running again.

Very true, but this is the first time in my adult life that I can remember THIS much crime bleeding into the tourist areas.

I didn't care if the monuments came down or not.
I just think that Mitch didn't either. He used it as a platform to vault himself into the national discussion, and has ignored completely the cities issues.

Yeah I plan on not renewing my dues for riding in Mardi Gras parade for next year until some real changes are made. 1 by 1 can make a difference.

I was always proud of New Orleans being my hometown. But not for the last four years+. I have a friend (who is from New Orleans) who has lived all over the US/China. Now she wants to come back to New Orleans. She said she wanted to live in Mid-City, she was very surprised to hear me say don't move back. I said if you want to move back the best area is Metairie.
ETA: I just want to add this has nothing to do with the monuments. It is the crime and the apathy towards the crime.

My wife wanted to come down for her birthday next month. She told me yesterday she just had a bad feeling in her gut about the trip. So we cancelled it, going to head to Fort Worth instead.

I have two cousins that always fly in from Michigan every summer for a weekend. Asked if they would rather go somewhere like Austin instead.
I hate it, but I do not want someone getting stabbed and I honestly feel there is now always that small chance of getting stabbed.
