It was the first time in New Orleans for my daughters.

Where'd they stay?

A hotel in the quarter.

What'd they do?

St Louis Cemetery tour, A swamp tour, the riverwalk, the french quarter, the garden district. You know, the usual tourist stuff.

Yeah my mom used to carry a handgun in the early 90s living uptown.. my parents have said that recent times are starting to remind them of then.

In the early 90s, you were really limited in where you could go. There were parts of the FQ that you didn't visit in the daytime.

I don't live in NOLA but have family there and visit 2-3x per year. In my last visit (Feb), I didn't feel that way at all. With that said, I avoid the FQ whenever possible

Its much much much safer in NOLA today than it was 30 years ago. The difference is that today we have video cameras.

Yesterday was the first time I've ever heard Scoot on WWL say he understands why people don't want to come to New Orleans and he can't fault them for that. Even after he was attacked and robbed a few years ago he supported the city and said it wasn't that bad.

Liberal citizens and liberal government are ruining the city.

Couldn't agree more. It's sad too. Like many, I love the city of New Orleans. Some of the most amazing, kind hearted people I've ever met are from there, and some of the greatest times of my life have been in NOLA. But, as you said, as long as that clown is in office, putting his own personal agenda before the actual problems that the city faces, the city of New Orleans will never see another dime from me. Many others that I know feel the same way. Hit them where it hurts the most - the pocket book.

crazy as this sounds, the only "hope" I see is if Sidney Torres runs. He will be working around the clock, coked up, to get this city running again.

I honestly don't know what any mayor could do. Besides wait for another hurricane and not let the trash move back afterwards.

Those who choose not to patronage New Orleans are not " abandoning New Orleans". I was just mugged by reality . If you step back, and separate your emotional attachment from a place, and see it as it truly is, New Orleans fails. The blight and crime overwhelm all the good points . And the air of malevolence and the knowledge that if you are a victim, redress is highly unlikely. It just "feels" sketchy now in places that used to be solid.

If you are "of" that culture and want to stick it out as a show of solidarity, knock yourself out. But I'm of the age where I can hop on a plane and be most anywhere - Safely- and without being surrounded by thousands of professional predators-in a days time.In the meantime, You Nola loyalists work it out and get back to us when it's worthy of a visit .

I am 99.99% sure that you are a fool and pulled this number from your arse.

The .01 percent grace I am giving myself is because you might not be a fool, but a fricking moron.

Are you the "I know where you got your shoes" guy? .... can't have threads like this ruining your business.

Girlfriend's been begging me to take a day trip to New Orleans recently.

I'm going strapped, not drinking, and keeping my head on a swivel.

I can remember THIS much crime bleeding into the tourist areas.

The person that was seriously injured in the last vicious attack has a husband in Boston who is headed to NO according to news reports.

208 Bienville St is the address listed in the video of the assault. It is 5 blocks from Bourbon St. It is one block from Woldenberg Park. It was at 9 PM.

These two guys were not in typical tourist areas. They were walking toward a park at 9 PM. Maybe they were going to visit the New Orleans Holocaust Memorial.

208 Bienville St

Anyone getting several blocks off Bourbon St is not safe. And has not been for years.

I'd bet that one in three visitors sees some kind of crime, whether they recognize it or not.

The guy walking down the street with a sisal rug...that's to get over glass at the top of the walls in the Quarter.

The simple bump into a stranger...who was a pickpocket.

The panhandler who makes hundreds a day if he has one of the better corners.

The guy at the ATM trying to guess access codes and hiding his face from the camera.

The 'whups, my mistake' when the restaurant bill comes back with things you didn't order.

And on and on.

Time to share my favorite, though, a friend who lived on the North Shore, but during the week lived on Magazine where she had a store, was robbed on the street, broad daylight. She was going out for dinner with friends. Robber paused, and looked really hard at her, and asked,"Don't you work on Magazine?" She said she did. He handed her money back and said he didn't intend to rob her because he only robbed tourists.

Darned few tourists will come back and testify, was our guess as to why she got to keep her money.
