Do you prefer listening to live albums/music or studio albums?

I used to mainly listen to studio albums but within the last couple of years I have been listening to a lot more live stuff and I think I prefer it now.

A lot of live takes are incredible and the song is enhanced IMO. Of course, this also depends on the band.

Thoughts?

Depends on the band, and depends how good of quality the live album is. But at the end of the day, if I like the band enough, I'll always at least seek out any live material of theirs...

Ween is a great example of this.

Their studio stuff is insane off the wall, and while good, they're much. much better listened to live IMO.

I almost exclusively listen to live ween stuff.

All jam band fans will say live. Most everyone else will say studio.

I mostly prefer studio, though I do a love a few live albums.

Yeah, that's because in most cases not involving jambands, a "live" album is usually doctored so much, you may as well be listening to a studio album with crowd noise piped in, lol...if a band is gonna tamper with the integrity of the show that much, then yeah, just gimme the studio albums instead...

So many variables. Band to individual songs to individual shows. Led Zepplin is incredible. They were incredible recorded and live, but songs like No Quarter Live? Not so much.

So many recordings are over produced. 4 layered guitar parts that can't be replicated live etc. Or strings and keyboards on a recording but your band has no orchestra or keyboard player.

Told a guy at work about Sturgill Simpson the other day. So he sits there and pulls him up on his phone. I can't remember what he was playing (song) but it was the recording and its way over produced with a ton of sound before the song starts. I told the guy he needs to find the same song on youtube done live,

I had a bunch of Pearl Jam live shows as a kid that I used to love listening to.

My dad had a bootleg Billy Joel CD that he used to wear out that was awesome. I wish I had that thing now.

It's a shame that there aren't many live Zeppelin recordings to be had. They would absolutely shred live and it doesn't get appreciated like it should.

PJ Radio. Got me thinking in this thread. Constant live shows, and most are recorded well. Still some songs do not translate live. Another variable is longevity. Does Porch live sound as good as the Ten recording? Hell no, not anymore. Vedder's voice can't do that shite anymore.

Before Cornell died they did the Temple of the Dog tour and recorded those shows. Cornell's voice OF COURSE can't hold up to his mid 20's self on the original recordings. Say Hello 2 Heaven is impossible for him to replicate at 50+ years old and against a full band.

Depends on the audience as much as the band. Assholes who "wooooooooooo!" and shite during quieter moments in a song have caused me to toss live albums where the performances were great.

I think their greatness was their acoustic portions. Nobody was doing that shite. My mentioning them was the guitar parts that Page and Jones could both play and layer over a record. Acoustics, Mandolins, 2 guitar parts. Tough to do live.

For example, there is nothing like Wilco live. Nels is able to stretch out with his solos and the band plays multiple different arrangements of their songs. Keeps it interesting.

Only live music I have ever liked really was Live At Gruene Hall and Iron and Wine because Beam's vocals are so much more lively live. Everything else, I prefer studio, and will not even listen to live.
