Yeah, I saw it.
Talked about his personal relationship w Hinch as a host to him on recruiting trip to Stanford, a teammate w him on the A's and then later was his coach w the Diamondbacks. So, when he said how much he has improved from his first job, where he essentially had to cut his teeth, to making great moves night in and night out, I took it w a grain of salt.
Smoltz, however, added some important knowledge. He said Hinch has learned the error in his ways and is finding balance b/w the analytical side and having good old fashioned baseball players in the clubhouse. I believe that.
Hinch has been progressively better in handling the pitching. I would like to see him advance runners more often, whether attempting SB's or bunting for a base hit w the SAC as a secondary outcome, or even just encouraging hitters to hit situationally.
Regardless, it was nice to hear Smoltz say that there is/was an awareness to play for more than 3 outcomes and some acknowledgement from the brass of the Astros that changes were necessary in addition to personnel.

to making great moves night in and night out,
This was the only thing that I raised my eyebrows at. I agree with everything they said about Hinch and the front office recognizing a need to deviate from pure analytics to building a solid team with those "guys" that just make you better by being a part of the team day in and day out. Read by me as McCann and Beltran.

Hinch is evolving just like everyone in the organization. Young players are growing. Luhnow seems to be more patient with his moves but also has made much better acquisitions recently. I think we're moving in a good direction

Jury is put on lunhow. He's failed at the deadline for 3 hears now. This is his waterloo.

This has nothing to do with Hinch IMO because he isn't the GM.
I also don't think they signed/traded for guys like Carter, Valbuena, Rasmus etc with the expectation they would be key pieces on a championship team. They were low risk high reward moves because of where the team was at when they made them. Once the building blocks that came up through the system as part of the rebuild proved they were ready (Springer, Correa, McCullers, Bregman) they went out and spent the money to get the veteran pieces to compliment them

It could have everything to do w Hinch.
He may have personally put in for the specific acquisitions.
In the case of Beltran, I know this to be true.
I don't hate on Hinch, just to hate on Hinch.

Yep. Excellent off season moves (McHugh, Harris, Fister, McCann Reddick etc.) but terrible inseason moves (Fiers/Gomez, Kazmir)
I do think we are in a position now with our roster that we can sell off some of the farm and make a move that will enhance our chances not only this year, but for the near term future with an Archer or Cole.

By saying "learning the error of his ways" you're implying he also built the roster from 2015 and 2016. Whether he asked Luhnow to acquire Beltran or not the first part is not true.

Come on his offseason moves have been VITAL for this teams success so far
The Gomez deal obviously stings but obviously nobody would've expected it to end up like that. The Giles trade is still to be determined IMO
His drafting and lottery ticket trades have been outstanding. And obviously it's still very early but Yuli has been an asset as well

2014- traded Cosart for a decent package, not sure how this is a fail as we were not contending
2015- fail
2016- is keeping our prospects a failure last year? Don't think any trade he could've made would've made us contenders
2017 deadline will be a big step for him
Posted on 5/10/17 at 6:47 pm to dhav14
I agree about 2017 deadline being massive, but we gotta remember that even the best GM's can't make deals that end up working out every time. Look at that contract Epstein gave Heyward

Those were my words, not Smoltz. I may be reading more into what he said, but I took it to mean also understanding the use of his players according to their abilities rather than only their lifetime statistics.
But, I agree with your point regardless.

Good perspective. I can agree with this.

was it though?
it was a loss, but you had the eventual WS champ beat in the 8th
your rookie SS just screwed the pooch

We were strictly speaking about the trade deadline. Gomez/Fiers and Kazmir turned out to not be the pieces we needed
Posted on 5/10/17 at 7:12 pm to wahoocs
Yeah others have said what he said this offseason and this year so far too. I think the Astros got guys like Reddick/Beltran/McCann because
A) Crane and the front office knew this team could contend right now so were willing to be more aggressive and spend on veterans
B) Free agents around the league knew this young core could contend right now so they were interested. McCann waived his no trade clause to come here and has said it's because he knew how talented this team is
The surprise 2015 year led them to stick with largely the same group last year I think. These are all just my opinions of course and I could be wrong

they didn't "win" it either so it's a valid point
this team still needs a couple of pieces but every team in the MLB has a weakness of two
a BP lefty is not that glaring a weakness compared to other teams
I would just like to see a stronger #2

That team never should have lost the division. It was a great learning experience for the younger guys who were on that team though I think as much as it sucked at the time
