It is ridiculous...but she is the chief justice not a legislator.
Follow the damn law.
Plenty of legislators working on reducing sentences for nonviolent crime right now as we speak (type). I hope they are successful. I hope we eventually follow CO example.
But that is not an excuse for a justice to make up their own law.

I've treated inmates in both state and Federal prisons. How about you?
I'm not medical doctor but have worked with inmates, in and out of prison, for a number of years (in a former life of some sense).
We don't have to proper resources in place to properly handle and reintroduction ex cons into the working world.
To say there are incredible resources for educational training and rehabilitation is a joke and exceptionally naive.
Sure, there are programs and a number of success stories but the recidivism rate for individuals that spent time in prison is substantially higher than those that go through a diversion/rehab program.
You are comparing apples to oranges with the comparison between prisons and mental health wards in regards to drug offenders.
I'm well aware of the budget slashing that's occluded to mental health facilities...thanks Jindal.
But I'm not talking about sending drug offenders to mental health wards. I'm arguing we need better programs in place to divert drug offenders away from prison and receive the training and rehab to reorganize their lives.
Again, most of the crimes committed in LA are directly drug related crimes. Most of those are marijuana related.
Prison is not the answer for these individuals.
It's the backward thinking that all must see jail time that has led us to the prison crisis we are in and the extremely high recidivism rate.
And the lack of emphasis on education in south LA.

So a Louisiana Supreme Court Justice isn't supposed to determine if the law is unconstitutional?

They would still have to pass a drug test for work but at least they wouldn't have a wasteful criminal record and zero time in prison.
Drug users are shitty employees and in a construction environment dangerous to their co-workers.
Making it legal doesn't mean I have to hire you.

My problem with this is that there are people convicted of violet crimes who do far less time.
Its crazy. I understand that pot is against the law but that seems pretty excessive.

I am curious why they dropped the gun charges on him in this situation. Seems odd.
Probably plea-bargained in exchange for a guilty plea for another crime.
The guy isn't being imprisoned for weed. He's getting a Lifetime Achievement Award for his long career as a criminal dumbass.

That he is, but for the marijuana charges and conviction, he wouldn't be in prison.
We have no idea what happened with the gun charge.

Yet, Cameron Robinson gets caught with some dope here in Monroe last summer and our awesome DA says that they work so hard in the summer while we are in the AC.
F-the law.
F-the law.

Honestly anyone who supports this conviction shouldn't be allowed to vote. There's not one rational argument you can make that supports such an excessive conviction. We're going to spend millions locking up someone over 18 grams of marijuana. How about legalizing it, taxing it, and then using the billions you generate to actually improve the state? We all know Louisiana needs a lot of help.

successful.
The DA's association and sheriff's lobby has the legislature by the balls. In addition to that, it's easy to drag out a "tough on crime" campaign here because the population is stupid as shite.

And a stolen pistol. My arse is going to jail if I'm pulled over with drugs and a stolen firearm.

#1 you didn't sweat, you had A/C
#2 you didn't have any Alabama boosters contribute to his campaign fund

I believe it is no coincidence that SOB retired shortly after the Cam Robinson incident.

I'm a small government conservative, so I want to ensure we provide bunches of funding for our local PD to buy up surplus army equipment and pay nice pension to a bunch of fat fricks that contributed very little to the concept of law and order.

I understand this view but you still have to believe marijuana should be a jailable offense to make the premise defensible.
No, actually you don't, only the lawmakers. My personal beliefs on marijuana have nothing to do with my opinion this guy will never get it right.
