re: I think secondary needing to be addressed more important than one pass rusher

I think it's less that our secondary is terrible and more that we've been extremely unlucky with injuries there past few years. Not sure how many teams in the NFL could survive pulling CBs off the street to fill a roster on gameday. Patriots maybe and that's probably about it.
I'm interested to see how Williams comes back from his injury. I remember the Saints feeling like he was going to be great last year and then he suffers a neck injury in the first game. Our CBs could be loaded this year 5 deep.

Nailed it. We get more pass rush our DTs than most other teams. Rankins and Fairley aren't fat run pluggers.

Part of it is Payton/Loomis don't value durability enough imo.

When Seattle was making those Super Bowl runs, they dominated with the front 7...no one was more physicall up front.
their cover 3 scheme allowed them to sign 1-dimensional guys like cliff avril for 3rd and longs
they only have 1 dominant DL and that's mike bennett (who is comparable to cam)
thomas, sherman, wagner, and kam make that defense go

The entire depth chart aside from Crawley was wiped out in 2nd game of the year. All healthy and we have a good secondary. I think PJ is a good one, sucks about his health first 2 years. Dude balled out in preseason and was playing great first couple games of season prior to injury. We finally have good DTs, and a good secondary group, if healthy.

last year the Saints has legitimately no talent playing CB all year, bro
New England has been winning championships with rookie free agent CBs making plays for years.
They have dominated the front 7, bro.
I agree the secondary needed better personnel, but a better pass rush will make a larger impact.
Hell, look at the two Giants' Super Bowls, the whipped everyone on the DL.

Saints have been decimated by the injury bug past few years. They're a few rolls away from being a playoff team honestly when you look at how close several losses were. Rankins came back in the middle of the season and he really show his potential. I thought he played great and can be something special if he continues to develop. Once more defensive players started to come back the defense played noticeably better. Just goes to show you how important the draft is just for depth because injuries will happen regardless. We're still thin on DL and LB. Our LB starters are not great to begin with and DL we have really no depth there if any injuries happen. Solid line on paper but you need depth behind them.

2011 roman harper had 7.5 sacks when they let him blitz in the lolb spot. I say just make him one of our pass rushers and let him blitz.

there was 1 guy who would make a major impact on our pass rush and he went #1 overall
then there was a 2nd tier of taco and barnett, who we didn't have a chance to draft
after that it's all about the same level of guy and we drafted one of those guys

with top-shelf CB play, too
there were no JPPs this year

Yet we consistently continue to draft players with injury issues. Ramczyk, Lattimore, and Anzalone are all concerns.

Go watch the film, that secondary is great because the front 7 dominates on first down and set them up for success.
Even P. Peterson said Seattle's DBs are as good as advertised and cited the fact that they aren't asked to do what he and other CBs are asked to do.
Again, you need at least one solid to dominant CB in the backfield and the Saints don't have that. Better personnel is needed in the secondary, nonargument.
However, their pass rush was one of the worst in the league. Yes, Cam is great but he can't generate consistent pressure by himself.
Now if Rankins comes on all year, we may have a little something.

that's b/c he and Sherman got into a shite-talking fest b/c PP plays man and covers the best guy and SEA has a cover-3 scheme with LCB and RCB, and he was saying due to that he does more and Sherman does less and isn't as good

and we drafted a pass rusher
there was 1 elite guy (who went #1), 2 solid guys (who were gone by 32), and a bunch of developmental or flawed guys (and we drafted one). those are the tiers

solid at worst secondary
if not injured, so is ours...

they did just spend a high pick on a CB and huge money for Bouye, so they obviously felt secondary is worth investing in
agree, but did or did they not have a very adequate pass rush? you are saying they had shite for secondary, basically, in your post yet they are top 5 vs. the pass... how is that?
quote:
their #1 CB just signed a major $ deal with the pats
plus they had that weird ryan exotic blitz package working. they don't have this supreme pass rush talent, either
so they had 1 CB.... and go look at they Lorenzo Alexander's sack total last year... and get back with me about "pass rush talent"... top 5 with 12.5 sacks....

Seattle Seahawks
great secondary
even better pass rush... 2 guys with double digit sack totals...

The Giants had the best DL in the league on their two Super Bowl runs. Their secondary was slightly above average.

We really don't even know what we had before the draft. We've played the last two years with roughly half of our defensive starters out.
That's how bad the health situation has been.

My issue with our pick at 11 is the simple fact that this was one of the deepest DB drafts in a decade.
We had Barnett available at 11 and could have picked a very serviceable CB at 32 or even later.
That and Lattimore missed an absurd amount of games in college.
We have an elite d end with Cam, he needs support. Barnett could have been that needed support, all we needed was solid to above average play from the other DE...not elite

Rex Ryan creates pressure with his scheme
Lorenzo Alexander is your argument? he's 33 years old and his highest sack total before 2016 was 2.5. you really want to argue that it wasn't Ryan's scheme that got those sacks and was the elite talent of a 33 year old on his 5th team?

bennett is elite
the rest is from their coverage/scheme

so naturally you want to draft a bunch of guys with injury concerns, like we just did....
