So we can stop this stupid issue of tipping. When and where and how much to tip your employee shouldn't be my job as a customer. Pay everyone at least minimum wage and the issue is gone.

Fully agreed. You don't tip in Eastern Europe... they get paid just like anyone else does.

Agreed.

The whole reason people say that there should be tipping is because it is to "keep them honest", but that last thread shows that people still top even with bad service so that whole argument is thrown away.

Pay them minimum wage and get rid of the stupid practice.

good luck getting decent people to serve tables at a restaurant for even $10/hr.

Servers at nice restaurants can make $200-300 in an 8 hour shift.

I'm fairly certain that if, with tips, you don't make minimum wage the employer is responsible for supplementing your wages.

That's how it was when I was in undergrad, and had several friends who waited tables with the same situation.

But the food prices will go up!

Running a business is hard! Woe is me! I can't afford to pay my employees more/insurance!

You're a business person, "Gods gift to man" as many of them think they are (even though there are so many of them. How can you be that special if there are so many of y'all and most of y'all are average?). Be better and innovate and stop making the customer responsible for feeding your employees.

You're going to be really hard pressed to find many people willing to wait tables or tend bar for just minimum wage.

So... places that are worth a shite will have to pay more, and your prices will go up accordingly.

You think your quality of service at a restaurant is bad now? Are you honestly telling me that a person who works at Burger King should make the same amount of money as an upscale craft cocktail bartender or a wine sommelier?

Can you start a spin off thread about tipping at sonic? The OT lives that one and we haven't had our weekly sonic tipping thread this week.

Not really.....the problem is the "concept" of tipping. Tipping was based ENTIRELY on the waiter providing good service. Today most waiters believe they're ENTITLED to a good tip even when they provide shitty service.

If they don't make any tips, the employer is mandated by law to make up the difference. Therefore they will make AT LEAST minimum wage regardless.

If you look at recommended tipping rates apparently tipping is expected in a lot of places that many people don't realize. For example, the recommendation for tipping your hotel maid is $5/night.

This thread is anchored due to "Spinoff thread" in thread title.

I agree. Laugh all you want, the service industry can be extremely difficult (depending upon the employee's work ethic). I think it's absolutely b.s. they don't receive minimum and make off tips.

Or let the market set the rate, just a crazy thought.

DR: quick note- causing the restaurant to more than triple the hourly salary of the majority of the employees will absolutely --- not --- raise the prices of the food...

PS - if you can't afford the tip, stay home and cook. Lazy and/or poor fricker.
