MLB approves no-pitch IBB for 2017 pending union approval

As part of its initiative to improve pace-of-game play, Major League Baseball has approved a change to the intentional walk rule, going from the traditional four-pitch walk to a dugout signal, team and union sources told ESPN's Howard Bryant.
MLB has studied various ways to quicken games.
ESPN's Jayson Stark reported earlier this month that MLB had made formal proposals to the players' union to usher in both raising the strike zone and scrapping the practice of lobbing four balls toward home plate to issue an intentional walk.
Getting rid of the old-fashioned intentional walk would eliminate about a minute of dead time per walk. In an age in which intentional walks actually have been declining -- there were just 932 all last season (or one every 2.6 games) -- that time savings would be minimal. But MLB saw the practice of lobbing four meaningless pitches as antiquated.
Stark reported at the time that for the intentional walk rule to go into effect this season, an agreement between the league and union would have to be reached "sooner rather than later," since spring training games are close to beginning.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said Tuesday he didn't want to share specifics of his priorities for alterations.
"There's a variety of changes that can be undertaken,'' he said. "I'm committed to the idea that we have a set of proposals out there and we continue to discuss those proposals in private.''

Raising strike zone?
Is it not, and always been,
Below letters to knees?
I know its called a ball now if its just below letters.

I like the change. Although some great highlights were made by bombs hit off of the intentional walk pitch

I like it. I know there have been games won and lost by a pitcher throwing one in the shitter trying to throw four straight balls. I think those instances are too few and far between to justify keeping the current rule.

As is Mark Wohlers

Hell, Texas A&M won last night on a walk-off wild pitch during an intentional walk

I have been saying they should do this for years.

The intentional walks thing is blah. On one hand I hate changing things just to change things, but on the other it's insanely rare for anything of note to actually happen on an intentional walk.
I would be surprised if this had any sort of material effect on the pace of games, especially in the AL.

Welp, no more of that.

Yes it will save time. Dont like the change though.

It will save one minute of gametime every 2.6 games according to the article. Seems like an unnecessary change to make

Classic case of mistaking doing something with doing something effective. Like requiring driver's licenses to fly after 9/11 even though all the hijackers had driver's licenses.

It's more than just a wild pitch or hit off an intentional walk, though. It can mess with a pitcher's rhythm. I've seen plenty of instances where a pitcher, particularly later in games, intentionally walks a batter and then struggles to find the strike zone afterwards.
I've also seen pitching changes made where the manager then calls for an intentional walk with the new pitcher (stupid decision), and the reliever is then unable to throw strikes. It's a game management issue.

So it amounts to reduction of one hour of game time over the course of a season? Yeah, this will fix everything.

More like 15 hours.
I can't believe people are hating on this. Obviously there are bigger things that need to be done to help the game move along. But the intentional walk is a complete waste of time and this is the first step in the right direction. Hopefully this can open the doors for next offseason when the players union can't shite on every idea to speed up the game.
ETA: unless you meant 1 hour per team, then yeah that's correct

Not a fan at all. Say there's a runner on 2nd base and you are intentionally walking the batter to set up a force play at 1st, 2nd, or 3rd base. The runner at 2nd at least has the option of attempting to steal 3rd base with the current rule, but this rule change would eliminate that. I know that would be rare, but it's still a potential part of the game that is taken away. The automatic walk just sounds like a video game, not real baseball. Plus I hate changing rules just to change them. The NFL does that constantly and it has hurt the game.

Like you said, it's rare, and it's a step in the right direction to take out the "just because" rules of the game.
I won't miss this at all.
