What is really going on with the basketball team? (No BS, honest truth)

What is going on internally? Externally? We are not as bad as we are playing, are we? I mean, we lack a true Center, or much of a defense either, but still...
We won more games in the past with less talent, and that is a fact. 2009 and 2010, we lacked much talent outside of Tasmin Mitchell and still won 11 games each season. For that matter, we won 18 games in 2011 with Justin Hamilton and Andre Stringer, nothing else.
So what is really going on right now? Did the players quit on JJ?

we have a bad coach -- not just tactically (lack of set plays, schemes, etc.) but on a broader level.
Jones doesn't demand discipline, effort, and intensity from his players, and he's a poor motivator. Based on all of that, his players don't want to (or aren't required to) play hard for him. And they don't.

The coach sucks and the players quit on him. Pretty simple

That's on the players. You should want to play hard and win regardless of your coach. If you don't try or care, that's 100% on you.

I don't think the players have completely quit on him. I just don't think that they have any confidence that anything can be done to turn things around once things start going bad. Kind of accept that the loss is coming when things start going south.

Individually, yep. When it's happening collectively, it's on the coach. That's how team sports work, bro.

It's kind of like how some recruits from football said the atmosphere was completely different compared to pre Miles fire to when Orgeron took over. Like it was almost just a blah atmosphere and no players saw hope in the season.
Same thing could be happening with basketball.

The coach is terrible, but this team isn't nearly as talented as some of you think. It's a very bad team. They are weak physically and weak mentally. They have very little competitive drive compared to other teams.
Only 2 or 3 players on this team would play at all for their opponents.

If they had completely quit they wouldn't have come out and played like they did for the first 30 minutes of the last two games. I just don't think they have confidence in the coach and that makes them doubt their ability to finish games. Obviously I could be completely wrong.

9 posts in and nobody talks about the biggest loss this team has endured, and that's losing Craig Victor.
say what you want, but this team would have at least 4 more victories if he doesn't get kicked off.

These young college players have very little motivation to finish out the season.
Winning starts with a vision, goals, a plan, and leadership. This year's team is void of everything.
Mr. Alleva and his administration have to decide how successful they want the men's basketball program at LSU to be. What resources do they want to commit to make LSU a top 10 or 25 program ? What vision do they have for success ? Are they willing to pay a generous salary ? Do they want to set goals or do they want to go cheap and hope for the best ?
Nutshell: it starts at the Top. All that exists now is politics and apathy.

In year 5 the players recruited and their development fall squarely on the coaching staff.
So bad evaluation, lack of need based recruiting(finding a big man in the last 2 years), lack of devolpment once on campus. I could go on.
How about this: your team is in a scoring drought, your best player has 29 pts with around 6:00 left in the game, yet that player fails to take a shot the rest of the game. You don't run a single set play to get Blakney, your best player a shot, and your 9 pt lead turns into a 20 pt loss. That's a 29 pt swing in the last 10 min. of the game. I don't think I have ever heard of such a thing happening

I watched them last night and it felt as though they quit and JJ is more worried about not making anyone mad so he lets the inmates run the asylum.
He is a nice guy personally, and I have nothing against that but when it comes to coaching, he needs a backbone. He needs to get pissed off and angry.

He should do the Coach K thing and take back all their LSU gear and lock them out of the arena until they earn it. (Not now obviously, but three weeks ago)
I bet you two or three guys would have quit if that happened, that is just the way this team seems to be. No leadership, no effort, and no respect for themselves.

They have quit on Johnny Jones. It started last year with the Ben Simmons debacle and carried over to this year!

Two things:
1. The players have quit on Jones (actually they quit at the end of last season. This is just a carry over) and do not trust in his ability to do anything from a coaching standpoint to fix the issues.
2. Jones can't teach the game well enough to solve the problems and can't motivate well enough to overcome them. Watch him during the games. Is there a more apathetic coach in America? Good, bad, it doesn't matter. His lack of enthusiasm doesn't change. The players don't feed off of him. He doesn't demand accountability. Terrible defense. Who cares? We'll go out an play terrible defense the next game. No offensive execution, structure. Poor shot selection? Selfish play. So what? He's not going to do anything to change it.
The players don't see Jones as a leader. They don't believe he can make them better. They don't trust him to push the right buttons to get things back on track when they stray off course. Players buy into good coaching. They listen to what their coach says because he has navigated those waters before. I don't think this team could care any less as to what Jones is saying.
He is a de facto AAU coach. As close as can be for major college basketball he just rolls the ball out there and lets whatever happens happen. I heard him in the postgame interview say "we have to figure out how to close out games." After 12 straight losses isn't it your fricking job to figure it out? Here's a hint, you close out games by defending and and being sound with the basketball on offense. Not by allowing open looks with lazy defense and playing with a completely disorganized offense that consists of 5 individuals all trying to make individual plays and turning the ball over in the process.
Right now LSU is just a collection of individual talent trying to each show off their individual abilities in hopes to extend their playing careers beyond LSU. Jones is basically just the guy who tells them what time to show up for practice/games and stands on the sideline during the game. I truly don't know if the team would actually notice if he left to grab a hot dog 10 minutes into the game. It certainly wouldn't affect the play on the court.
Right or wrong on their part, the players have tuned Jones out. I think they have probably just become numb to the losses and even if they are having a bit of success (like the first parts of the last two games) any hint of adversity sinks the ship.
