Bubba Clinton enabled NK to get nukes and the dear leader has basically allowed Iran to get theirs.

No. It would be Iraq 2.0

Beat the shite out of a weaker army. Topple their leaders regime. Then what???

Always been our problem. Then what????

Iran has hated us since the 1970's. going to war with them will not change that. We need to be out of the entire region. This is not WW2 Europe. They are not just exterminating Jews. They kill everybody. Their own kind. If there were no oil and no Jews it would be Rawanda or the Congo. A HORRIFIC genocide but it would end. There is no good Muslim side to pick.

Wait and see if someone smarter takes charge instead of trying to install someone ourselves.

If they're just as dumb, kill them too and wait for the next one.

It's only a problem if you try and govern them after. That never works.

Iran has had a growing secular movement for a decade or two now. Their government is split between Muslim hardliners, and a more democratic arm. Unfortunately the Muslim arm has more power, but they have been growing out of favor with many Iranian citizens. We, as a nation, should be fostering the secular movement as much as we can, without meddling too much in their government. Putting them "on notice" and antagonizing them won't help that. That's not to say we should buddy up with them. We should remain vigilant on policing the Muslim arms quest for nuclear arms, and condemn their threats towards Israel. But we should also recognize a change in the power structure could win us another huge ally in that region.

Here's a link for some more background...

Considering an earthquake in Iran usually destroys towns, I would think it wouldnt take us but about a week to level the whole damn place with 24/7 bombing. The Iranians know this, they know what we did to Iraq. They are just like most bullies tough as long as they pick on smaller kids.

Well, i don't think we need to be dethroning anymore governments in the ME. As unfortunate as it is, that entire region needs brutal dictators to keep the rest of the radicals in line. And the ME is about 75% radical at any given moment. Removing the Rhouhani (Iran), Al-Assad (Syria) will only encourage more ISIS/Al Qaida type groups to form.

How traditional are their proxy fighters? How traditional was their role in the Iraqi insurgency?

Oh come on, bruh. You know us beating the shite out of their conventional forces (which would be relatively short work) would only be the start of it. Just like Iraq. Except Iran is 4x larger and has a well developed network of fighters and operatives scattered about. How bout we pretend to get along as long as they're focused on fighting ISIL.

Well not if you believe Trump is talking to the people of Iran. He's talking to the exact same Muslim arm that controls Iran, not the secularists.

Agree. Until then, put a stranglehold on their economy. Freeze all assets from the US, and pressure our allies to freeze Iran's assets as well. These actions must not be allowed to go unpunished. And as long as we have Russia as an ally and not an enemy, they could put pressure on Iran as well. I think that is the point of talks with Russia. Put a stranglehold on Iran.

I get that, but the end result could be an escalation to the point of war, which is what some in this thread seem to be clamoring for. Invading Iran threatens a backlash from the secularists there that are supportive and open to Western ideals.

I do think Obama was softer on the hardliners in the Iranian government than he should have been, especially given their meddling in Iraq, both militarily and diplomatically. And I would support the Trump administration putting more pressure on them. I'd prefer it be done through back channels and not on Twitter and via press conferences with the language they chose to use.

What the hell does that even mean? Are we going to bomb them? Impose sanctions? Write a strongly-worded letter? This is stupid, empty rhetoric. If we are going to do something to stop them testing missiles, then we should spell out what we want them to do and what we'll do if they don't comply.

I totally agree that invading Iran would be a terrible idea, but the notion that we can somehow achieve our goals by appealing to "secularists ... that are supportive and open to Western ideals" in states run by extremists is fantasy. Assuming they even exist, they are completely irrelevant.

No. That's not what happened at all. You might need to read up on some recent history and get back to us.

Not a complete fantasy. Iran has gone through a couple revolutions over the past 100 years. Seeing another one isn't completely out of the question. I do think it's a long shot though, and a military revolution is probably a fantasy. Instead it will just be a gradual revolution fueled by slow acceptance of Western norms.

Don't worry, this was just Flynn's dumbassery. I'd like to see what his statement was going to be before Mattis dialed him back.
