It all depends on how you look at it.
You can look at it from a strict 8+11=19 approach and be right.
You can look at the short pattern and get 40 and be right.
Or you can see the long pattern and get 96 and be right.
It's ambiguous nature coupled with multiple correct answer and willingness for humans to defend their "right" answer against others "wrong" answers are why these types of questions get passed around on Facebook.
Meanwhile the person who started the 200k shared post gets a nice little check from Facebook for all the traffic and runs off to the bank not giving a frick
