Why do you hate roads? If the government didn't build roads what would become of the children? Wouldn't that be letting The Russians win?

People act like private prisons are the juries and judges that sentence criminals. If the argument is that there are too many crimes because private prisons lobby, fine. That still isn't a good argument, but it at least makes more sense.
The argument is that prisons are not inherently a business. And when you make it one, all sorts of things happen that run counter to the stated aims/goals of society in regards to incarcerating people. You should read about Walnut Grove

Here's your bi-annual reminder that big government liberals love "building roads" but hate the internal combustion engine.

Yep, not even remotely the same as the meme.

You won't hear me argue that government is in any way perfect - or even overly competent. It's just that there are clearly some fields not appropriate for privatization. I don't have a problem in principle with the privitazation of some roads, but question: if it's so obvious that private industry is better, why are Americans always raving about how great the Autobahn is than US roads?

look you may just be ignorant ofthis, so i'll explain

the "muh roads" meme is just a really popular meme among the smaller government types

a major reason for this is b/c roads are simple and can easily be handled by private parties

prisons? much more complex, both in terms of scale and regulation (due process and civil liberties)

b/c it has more personal responsibility and fewer governmental regulations

Because their population knows how to fricking drive which is a separate and distinct issue. Case-in-point, ask about emergency flashers and their proper usage either here or on the OT. Observe the responses.

Funny meme.

That being said, I don't see how the taxpayers simply hand money to private companies. Some entity has to collect the funds.

Private prisons are a good example. Also, the government is "we the people", so I don't really agree that taxpayers are obviously distinct "the government".

There are no legally operating private prisons. There are non government corporations contracted, paid, and regulated by the state to operate prisons. This is in no way a private industry, and if government ceased to pay for the operation of these prisons, they would become some of the worlds most intense paintball courses.

It's lazy to call prisons "private", but roads "public" because the funding mechanism for contracted prisons and roads are nearly identical.

Our politics are different but I love that scene. That is my favorite "office" movie.

So you want to hand over eminent domain to private companies to build roads? Where would that go wrong?
